I probably like the 2000 version because I have never really cared much for the original. For those who LOVE the original TV version ..... the Carrey film is an abomination. Which did you see first ? Were you familiar with the book before seeing the film or the TV show ? I read the book and saw the TV special before the movie. I have never been a fan of Dr. Seuss.

moviemouthI have only become acquainted with Seuss as an adult and don't care much for the Christmas cartoons BUT for me .. the TV Grinch is perfection ... not a term I use lightly ! I watch it every year ... once a year even tho' I have it on disk. I now could say the lines along with Karloff but I don't ! Most of Seuss I can take or leave but the Grinch is in a whole other plain !
For a fun read : The Tough Coughed as He Ploughed the Trough.

For a fun read : The Tough Coughed as He Ploughed the Trough. Most people do love it and I understand why. While sweet and has a nice message, it has always sort of bored me. I watch the Jim Carrey version about once every couple years around Christmas. It is a strange, more cynical bombastic comedy version of the book and TV special and I enjoy it for what it is. It still ends with the same meaningful message as the original though.

I never even watched this trash. The cartoon was the best adaption so no reason to mess with any of the later stuff. The cartoon with Boris Karloff is still the all-time best Dr. Seuss adaptation in my opinion.

I tend to hear Karloff in his movies and hear him as the Grinch but never vice versa when seeing the Grinch.

It’s bad but I enjoy it. At least the entire production seems to be trying. It’s never boring to look at.

You have the Grinch out-running an explosion in slo-mo!! If that isn't great, then I don't know what is. The movie is like a SNL Grinch skit turned into an entire movie.

I watched it right before last Christmas and I really wanted to like it, but it’s too reluctant to get away from the silly (and I’d argue easy) humor of a kid-friendly Jim Carrey. Like I said, I enjoy it though. It’s a fun watch around Christmas.

I refer to it as "cheap" humor. Basically the stuff you "dislike" about it is exactly what I like about it.

I remember the hype when it came out--but other than clips never bothered with it.
Tony the Tiger did the singing in the cartoon. "It's grrreat!"
I was never into Seuss books though.

I suppose I should change that to “I wanted to think it was good...but I still enjoy it.” Yeah I guess we have a different sense of humor. I’d have liked the Grinch to be a little more toned-down compared to the usual Carrey act.

Stretching a 30 minute TV special into a feature length movie is going to require a lot of padding and this movie does the padding with parody style humor. It does exist though and I think it is often very funny. The only humor I generally don't care for is spoof movie humor and this is because these movies NEVER take a break. One site gag after another for 90 minutes is usually what those movies are.

I'm not familiar with the source material but thought the film was fine. It's not quite a Christmas classic, but Carrey does a good job at playing someone other than himself and it's a good story. Not bad.

I don't know if I've said this on here before but I think it's an okay movie. I don't like it as much as I used to but I'm not a fan of the original book and thus not of the more faithful Chuck Jones adaptation. I find it to be a strawman of atheism and it downplays the greed element in favor of the goodwill message without putting forth a good argument toward the existence of god and in addition throws shade on outsiders. It reminds me of a Soviet Russian cartoon that I unfortunately can't find where the Russians overtake the gods by traveling into space. It's entertaining for those who believe it but not a very good argument, The Grinch because it's a strawman, and the Russian short because the USSR has collapsed.
