Interestingly enough, that is actually relatively around the first time I ever heard of a "selfie". I was in college and it was sometime between 2004 and 2006. I distinctly remember selfies were considered a bit cringey at first. Of course society would eventually embrace the selfie, but this was still before the smart phone.

Yeah that`s true, the oldest known painted self-potrait (as far as i know) was done by Jan van Eyck in 1433 called Portrait of a Man. So we can say that self portraits/ selfies has been going on for at least 587 years.
