You seem to think everyone innately “knows God” from birth. If this happened to you, congrats. It shouldn't just seem like that's what I think when I flat out told you: "I think all we need to know about God is innate. I'd say newborns are closer to God than any of us." Are you paying attention? I mean, I'm not writing novels here. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) Are you getting testy over the thought of being able to "know God" with what God gave you instead of what you got from some dude's book? He's just a man like any other, and as such, has no special insight in these matters that the rest of us don't. So this is what you think. Other people’s mileages vary. The Torah isn’t just some book to us. I’ve studied our philosopher’s book but it’s not required. It’s not all that usual for Jews to study. The Torah is the book that The People of the Book have been reading for 3300 years.

By the way, I said we are forbidden to proselytize to NON-Jews, not Jews. I don't get it.

By the way, I said we are forbidden to proselytize to NON-Jews, not Jews. I don't get it. The group called Chabad (the “ch” is guttural like a hard “h” sound) missionize TO JEWS all over the world. They are all rabbis. They provide religious services to Jews everywhere. They do not missionize to non-Jews AT ALL.

We were talking about proselytizing. proselytize: Convert to another faith or religion How can someone be converted to what they already are?

I consider proselytizing in Judaism to be preaching to bring people (Jews) closer to Judaism. My view.

Admin, If babies learning about God from birth is your un-religion, goody for you. It isn’t for everyone, obviously.

Needless aggression is a blast, though, eh? ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) More of a helpful tip. Things that are innate are not learned. Have you ever met a newborn? Innate: Hunger. Ability to suck on nipples (real or rubber) to eat. Will turn face to suck if their cheek is touched. Fear of loud noises. Fear of falling. Will grasp whatever touches their hands. Hatred of bright light. Hatred of pain, if they notice it. They don’t know what they are or what anyone else is, but they notice being held. It’s different from lying flat. If you put them down when they’re hungry, they don’t like it. They connect food with being held early. After two weeks, they start making eye contact. They don’t know what they’re seeing. Soon after that, they learn to smile. A month or two later, they learn to laugh. They bust a gut laughing at almost anything. They learn they have hands around this time. They use them to put everything in their mouths. Then they find their feet and put those in their mouths, too. They’re fun but not many things are innate to them. Believe whatever you want, though.

Silly me, I thought understanding what God means was the objective. I'm not sure why you think someone else has to do that for you, let alone an 800-year old philosopher who proselytized millions into the Jewish perspective. He's required only if he's an Orthodox Jew. And I don't think it is a requirement then...maybe among Hasids, however he wouldn't be on the internet if he was Hasidic. Therefore, he's probably an Orthodox or into some Kabala stuff he just doesn't want to talk about. Guide to the Perplexed is similar to the Christian Cloud of the Unknowing written in 14th century. Aish HaTorah has audio classes. They’re interesting and given by rabbis. I bought a 26 hour course on the 800 years back philosopher.

They’re fun but not many things are innate to them. They're also as pure as the driven snow. What more does your God want? (The list is much longer than that, by the way.) If I could actually believe what I wanted to, I'd believe that old philosopher does know more about God than you do. Good luck with your studies, Sci. I hope you're smart enough to get into heaven.
