What would the basic outline for it ought to be? In other words, what if Zack Snyder’s Superman was never part of a larger DC universe? This assumes that MoS itself would be basically the same movie as what it ended up being. What direction should the sequels have gone in?
Snyder has stated that one of the early ideas for a MoS sequel was to have Superman fight Metallo, so that would’ve been an obvious choice for the second movie. There’s even concept art of Scoot McNairy’s character as Metallo, so I’d say keep the character’s role as an amputee with a grudge against Superman, but change his name to John Corben, and have Lex Luthor turn him into Metallo for the third act.
I’m not sure where a third movie would go, however.

Metallo makes sense. I think a third movie should definitely have Brainiac as the villain. At some point I'd introduce Supergirl. Since Emil Hamilton is apparently deceased in this continuity, I'd make John Henry Irons/Steel into his scientific advisor and have him suit up at one point. Lex Luthor will be present but I'd keep him in the background as some kind of puppet master. For each sequel, the cold open will feature him fighting a familiar villain like Toyman or Atomic Skull.

He'd probably still die because WB has had a hard-on for the Death of Superman for 25 years. I don't know how to answer the question beyond that, by all accounts Batman was Snyder's idea and a fairly early one.

Snyder has always said that directing an adaptation of TDKR was a dream project of his, and BvS was likely the closest he’ll ever get to that. I just thought this topic would make for an interesting what-if.
