I saw the 4th season on sale at Goodwill for 4 dollars. I have so much stuff that i want to watch first, but at the same time i am woefully out of touch with anything newer on tv. And this show at the very least seems original.
Opinions on the show? Is there any real disadvantage at being introduced to a show starting with the 4th season?

It's a good show for its first four seasons. Then it gets progressively worse, although it remains watchable.
But yeah, you really should've started at the beginning.

The cliffhanger where Deb found out what her brother does? I disagree. That's where the show should should've went. I thought they would be setting up a Deb vs Dexter for the final series, but unfortunately that never happened.
Overall I consider season 6 to be the worst after season 8. I hate the Fight Club twist that was seen miles ahead, the wasting of Edward James Olmos and Colin Hanks as the villain.

I like Dexter for the most part. Season 4 is one of the show's best season but I wouldn't recommend starting there.

Nobody should start a show at season 4
You should always start at season 1

Does she turn him in? Does she become another Doakes? To be honest, I can't remember, that's how much it impressed me.
I thought the DDK storyline started well, didn't finish strong. S4 and Trinity set the bar too high

I agree. I just thought that Deb finding out should've happened. Spoilers for the OP who hasn't seen the show: I thought that after the season 6 cliffhanger, they would gradually go for for Deb getting increasingly against Dexter until she exposed him for what he was. In fact, I thought Dexter would kill LaGuerta in the season 7 finale effectively turning Deb against him.
