I'm not sure if it's an age thing - it probably is (I'm 42) - but I find that I can't retain the memory of a book or a movie very well if I read/watch it only once. Same goes for TV series as well, of course. I find that I can remember books for longer than I can remember movies, but with movies I may have completely forgotten almost everything within 2-5 years. Even when it's a good movie. If I watch it again, things will often come back to me as I'm watching, and I'll remember it for much longer, decades even. A book will stay with me for 5-10 years, but I'll still need a booster shot if I want to remember it much longer than that. It doesn't seem to matter if I do a repeat reading/watch long after the first time, or immediately after - so long as I've seen it at least twice, even if it were twice in short order, that's enough to make it stick.
All in all, though, I can't help feeling that I'm kind of wasting my time with books and movies, unless I make the investment of reading/watching them a second time. Anybody else have similar experiences?

My memory isn’t as good as it used to be but at the age of 62 I’m beginning to wonder how important it is to remember all those plot details when I’m on my death bed.
Mind you, it would be annoying if they decide to have a movie trivia contest in the care home.

I guess everyone's reason for reading certain books or watching some movies is different . For me , I read/collect books or watch movies that have some form of meaning for myself . And if I were on my death bed , what better way to go that reminiscing on a book or movie that spoke to you when you last read or saw it . Gee , when I was 42 , I was still getting date offers with pretty women (I wasn't worrying about the last book or movie I saw , if you know what I mean?) . Now that I'm old and tubby and tired , I look kindly on at the younger romantics . Mind you , I've still had some care come my way , mmmmm .

I don't know it's an age thing, movies I tend to remember better, but there have been so many books over the years, even when I was in school, I would read through them, struggle to remember anything, often had to reread whole sections just to remember something once. There are a ton of mysteries I read when I was a teenager that even a couple years later, I remembered the titles, I remembered I liked them, I remembered bits and pieces, but nothing about the actual plots.
And again, movies I'm not sure about, but TV shows...I watch Law & Order all the time, and the mothership series, by the time I come back around to season 1, there are some episodes you remember everything about them, others you've about forgotten completely.

I'm just in my early 30's but I have a worsening memory for movies because among other reasons, my brain is just clogged with too many movies, tv episodes, short films, and online videos that it's hard to keep it all straight.

Thinking about it now, there is at least one movie I can relate to on this. The Thing from Another World. I don't know how many times I've seen it over the years, and certain parts always stick out, but the overall plot, just one huge blank.

I'm in my late 30's and occasionally I can't even remember whether I've seen a particular movie or whether I only watched the trailer or some short clip from it. It also happens sometimes that I seem to recall a certain scene from a certain movie which then turns out to have been from a different movie.
With books I can recall very well which ones I've read, except with children's books and comic books, and I can usually remember the basic plot outline.
