The film was a huge critical and commercial success thanks to its epic scope and strong performances though the film has its share of detractors for its rather simplistic storyline and for "robbing" the Best Picture Oscar from Goodfellas which many felt was more deserving

Great movie, totally deserving of all of its accolades.
Did it deserve Best Picture over Goodfellas? Debatable, but that shouldn't take away from how great it was.
