Another 10- or 20-year break.
As should Star Wars.
Both are on overkill and overload right now.

I don't follow that either are on overkill or overload, hell people say the same thing about comic book films - of which there is a lot more material being made - yet those won't be taking a break anytime soon

I don't follow that either are on overkill or overload, hell people say the same thing about comic book films - of which there is a lot more material being made - yet those won't be taking a break anytime soon With comic book films, even though there are two major universes, Marvel and DC, they each have numerous characters, many of whom haven't even been seen onscreen yet, and just like the comic books themselves, there are multiple versions of each character and each universe. And while they are set in two general universes and individual characters appear in each others' films as well as group films in each universe, there is no single setting or look or theme. There are no constraints or tightly wound ground rules. Each of the forty-plus movies and television shows -- perhaps even more -- in Marvel's and DC's universes over the last 80 years are completely different in nature and mood from each other. Star Trek and Star Wars are pretty much the same general story or theme over and over again, even with new characters and new settings. The only difference is quality.

I've not yet seen Picard but am currently in the process of watching Discovery Season 3. The show barely counts as Trek in my eyes.
The first season blended the tone of Battlestar Galactica with traditional Star Trek tropes and references and the look of the Abrams movies.
The second season was more Trek-like but it had fallen apart by mid-season thanks to the Terminator story arc. Season 1 was much more engaging.
Season 3 appears to be the point where they've more or less made the series indistinguishable from Star Wars (i.e. fall of the Federation/Old Republic, etc.). It's dull at times, reasonably entertaining at others. Overall though, it feels nothing like Star Trek to me.
I'd have preferred a genuine follow-up to the TNG era shows. Hopefully Picard will do just that.

They need to go back to the source material and spirit, toss the 3 current series, start with a fresh series.

I would love to see another Star Trek film but they have been doing so many TV series (none of which I have particularly liked) I don't think that will happen any time soon. Star Wars -the films haven't been done well enough for people who are not die-hard fans, to want to see them.
