The role that Bill Murray took in Ghostbusters was meant for him.

Perhaps a couple more hit movies, then eventually, say in the 90s or 2000s, has a successful sitcom.

Probably something like the other early SNL stars: career fizzles out in the late 80s/early 90s, he either does or doesn't have a comeback, then it slows down again in the 2010s.
On the other hand, Jim would have probably jumped off a building.

It would have been hard for him to top what he had already accomplished.
I believe at one point in 1978, he had the #1 song, he was in the #1 movie, and appearing on the #1 late night television show. And when you consider he did all this while doing enough cocaine to get a small nation high as kites, that's pretty friggin impressive.

He would've definite;y kept pushing perhaps to work in more serious fare.

I thought he was really good in Continental Divide, a low-key romantic comedy he did after The Blues Brothers. He pulled that role off quite nicely and naturally. It's also interesting that for his last film, Neighbors, he insisted that Dan Ackroyd play the goofy character and he played more of the straight guy. The role reversal didn't really work, that film was a total dud. I think Belushi had the tools to do all kinds of rolls, but let's face it, he would have had to have a serious lifestyle change to have made those things happen.

He would have had a good run during the 1980s, but he'll start to flatter by the 1990s. After that, I guess he would have transition to doing comedy-dramas or tackle some dramatic roles.

I feel like he might have a similar trajectory to good old Bill Murray, he'd probably have transitioned to some indie dramas perhaps.

I agree about his drift towards more dramatic roles. Continental Divide and Old Boyfriends were pretty good. Granted he plays a slightly toned down comedic role in Old Boyfriends but he does well.

OK, "Belushi doesn't die." The first thing I thought of. "And now, let's say he stars in Ghostbusters. "He stars in Ghostbusters."

More Buddy Comedies with Aykroyd in the 1980s.
- Ghostbusters would have been called Ghost Catchers and not have been as big of a hit. It was like a futuristic sci if comedy set in NYC in the 2100s. Ghosts are everywhere., Ghost Catchers are like firefighters.
- Spies Like Us was also for him and Dan.
Then in the 1990s he would have started making family comedies. Probably playing father roles written by John Hughes.
Then he would have done Blues Brothers 2000.
Fizzled out. Then when Nostalgia hit in the 2010s, he would have done a few revival roles.

I could possibly see him taking “Groundhog Day” because Ramis and Murray were having a squabble. Ramis said he almost chose Tom Hanks over Murray but didn’t think Hanks would be believable as the cynical version of Phil Conners. Perhaps Belushi could have?

He could've possibly a more realized variation of what perhaps Jackie Gleason tried to be.
