I can tell you:
He has a mental breakdown, re-injured his hand/arm, devolves into heavy drinking and opioid abuse, is given a suspensive without pay, alienates everyone he knows except his partner who keeps trying to save him, to no avail. There is another string of serial killings modeled after the 12 days of Christmas, but they only get to eight, hence, the name of the sequel. Although not actively on the force, and being drugged out and smelly all the time, he assists off the record in helping solve the crime.

I believe there were several attempts to make a sequel, but somehow it never worked out. The script for the movie Solace with Anthony Hopkins originally started life as a sequel to Se7en.
