New countdown from Joe Posnarski on The Athletic. What the hell...
I'll keep the master list updated
100. Juan Gonzalez 99. Fred Lynn 98. Rocky Colavito 97. Albert Belles 96. Jimmy Sheckard 95. Quincy Troupe (Negro League C) 94. Fernando Valenzuela 93. Darrell Evans 92. Steve Garvey 91. Dave Parker 90. Frank Howard 89. Al Oliver 88. Willie Randolph 87. Lance Berkman 86. Paul Hines (1872-1891) 85. Ron Guidry 84. Wally Berger 83. Dwight Gooden 82. Elston Howard 81. Orel Hershiser
No.90-81 might be the perfect list of "great, but not Hall material" guys you could ask for, though I imagine I'll probably say that again here. Of the 10, the one guy I say might make the best case is Lance Berkman, sneakily better than you might think and a very good postseason player. But I don't think his stats are enough. I never saw Elston Howard play, I always thought he was already in the Hall.

Just as a clarification, the article is not making a case for any of the 100 to be in, just a list of the best players not in Cooperstown

I care about the MLB HOF more than I honestly should. It in fact pisses my dad off when we talk about it.
That being said I doubt there are 5 players (non cheaters) on this list id vote for.
Imo Fred McGriff should be #1.

And I don't know who this Urban Shocker is, but I'm pretty sure he wasn't better than Will the Thrill either, in spite of his AWESOME name.

Is he naming the players in order, meaning whoever is #1 is the single best player in baseball history that isn't in the HOF? Or is it just a list of the top 100 in no particular order?
If it's the former, I'll have to agree with millar up there re: Will Clark in relation to Buddy Bell.

And I don't know who this Urban Shocker is, but I'm pretty sure he wasn't better than Will the Thrill either, in spite of his AWESOME name. Shocker (not that idiotic horror film) won 187 games. BUT, 126 of those wins came when he pitched for the St. Louis Browns! That's a feat. And, like Dizzy Dean, Herb Score, Smoky Joe Wood, he had a short career. 18-6 for the 1927 Yankees, died from a bum heart a year later. I read a pretty good book about him
Posnarski's argument for Buddy Bell is his defense. Bell was one of the best defensive 3b not named Robinson or Nettles. He was tho 3b what Aparicio was to SS and Mazeroski was to 2b. But I agree about Will da Thrill.

If it's the former, I'll have to agree with millar up there re: Will Clark in relation to Buddy Bell. "This offseason, leading right up to the 2021 Baseball Hall of Fame announcement, we’re counting down the 100 greatest eligible players not in the Hall of Fame and ranking them in the order in which I would vote them in" - from the article header. Once again, this is Joe Posnarski's article. In his 60 greatest moments, he had Duane Kuiper's only HR at #2 and the end of A League of Their Own at #5. Lists like this are meant to be argued over and that's just what we are doing

Love this line for Browning: “I can’t hit the ball,” he famously said, “until I hit the bottle.”

70-61
70. Smoky Joe Wood T69. Omar Vizquel T69. Dave Conception T69. Bert Campaneris T69. Mark Belanger 68. Torii Hunter 67. Dan Quisenberry 66. Dick Lundy (negro League 1916-1937) 65. Charlie Keller 64. Andy Pettitte 63. Mark Buehrle 62. Pebbly Jack Glasscock (heh heh I said...) 61. Roger Maris
The #69 are basically the same player, all glove. Should defensive whizzes go in? There's gobs of players who got in by their bat alone. And the short careers players, Smoky Joe, Quiz, King Kong Keller, Maris. And one of my favorite nicknames. Glasscock (heh heh heh heh) was a SS who used to pick he small stones out of the infield. I know fuck all about Dick Lundy.
