70-61 70. Smoky Joe Wood T69. Omar Vizquel T69. Dave Conception T69. Bert Campaneris T69. Mark Belanger 68. Torii Hunter 67. Dan Quisenberry 66. Dick Lundy (negro League 1916-1937) 65. Charlie Keller 64. Andy Pettitte 63. Mark Buehrle 62. Pebbly Jack Glasscock (heh heh I said...) 61. Roger Maris The #69 are basically the same player, all glove. Should defensive whizzes go in? There's gobs of players who got in by their bat alone. And the short careers players, Smoky Joe, Quiz, King Kong Keller, Maris. And one of my favorite nicknames. Glasscock (heh heh heh heh) was a SS who used to pick he small stones out of the infield. I know fuck all about Dick Lundy. Quis was a dominating closer. Maybe not in the same way that Francisco Rodriguez or Gagne were but in an era that didn’t overvalue saves he racked up a good number of them. I always thought he should get in.

In my opinion, I wouldn't put Maris in the top 300. He had 2-3 good seasons. Two great seasons. aided by the ballpark. It's a shame he had a short career. Do we put in Denny McLain? Maris had 1,325 career hits. You just can't argue that.
By the numbers, Maris' numbers in 1960 were better than 1961. And Mantle had a much better year than Maris in 1961. Maris's only argument is 61.

Maybe someone can job my memory (I drank a lot in the 80's). what happened to Quisenberry? His numbers went to hell from 1984 to 1986 and there doesn't seem to be much injury. His WHIP in 1984 was 1.028 in 1984. In 1985, 1.225. In 1986, 1.426. A WHIP of 1.426 is horrific for a closer. For every inning he pitched, he gave up 1 and a half baserunners (more, WHIP doesn't account for errors). For comparison, Mo Riviera never had a WHIP above 1.186 (as a closer). Quisenberry was 33 when the wheels fell off. Was it just are weariness. The downward spiral of the Royals?

Not sure of anyone else in this grouping.

Not sure of anyone else in this grouping. I could make an argument for Stephens, Pierce and Wills also. But the argument is just 'there's worse players in the HOF" And the article isn't "These players deserve to be in". Just the best players no in.
Posnarski uses the players complete name. Maury Wills' whole name was Maurice Morning Wills. Wes Ferrell's middle name was "Cheek", Stan Hack's was "Camfield", Ron Guidry's was "Ames"

He shouldn't be within 1000 places of this list.

Even someone who hates the Yankees as much as I do thinks that's kind of goofy.

Thurman Munson is fine if the HOF voted him.

This will be interesting list. I see they include players who most likely be in HOF, like Omar Vizquel. I assume no active players. I would say Pete Rose is probably the best. We'll see where he rank. Some name off the top of my head who are not in the list yet (at 31 so far), including Pete Rose
Pete Rose A-Rod Barry Bond Roger Clemens David Ortiz Gil Hodges Joe Jackson Curt Schilling Don Mattingly Tod Helton Roger Maris Andruw Jones Trevor Hoffman (listed with a bit reluctant, but he had tremendous #s)

Has there ever been a story of courage in sports to match that of Curt and his Bloody Sock?
What a warrior
