No shit. He only played first for one season in Philadelphia
Well - you'd be shocked when you ask some people around here who the greatest 1B in Phils History was -
You get responses of -
Dick Allen Pete Rose
Oof
Who the fuck said that?

If Dick Allen gets in -
Ryan Howard gets in
Allen isn't the greatest 1st baseman in Phils history
You should get yourself a fact checker before you post anything. I bet you think Pete Rose is the greatest 1B in Phils history
Oof

Phillies Old-Heads around this area when reading sports blogs and listening to the 2 sports talk radio stations Show me one person who said Allen was the greatest 1b in Phillies history? Allen played 198 games at first. No one in their right mind would say he was the greatest.

I think Ryan Howard is the best Phillies first baseman in history. I think Rose and Allen are better players than Howard.

Not a lot of competition. Who else is there? Eddie Waitkus? Fred Luderus? Willie Montanez? The Phutile Phillies were one of the most incompetent organizations in sports history. From 1883 to the mid 1970's, they were a joke, year after year.

He's a fucking ignoramus. Like saying Yogi Berra in the greatest LF in Yankees history. Or Johnny Bench is the greatest 3b in Reds history

And I agree
But you'd be shocked - I hear this opinion a lot around here - there's some old timers on a local sports talk radio station on weekends I listen too - some of the old timers call in to talk about old school baseball, hoops, football, hockey at times - it's fun listen since a lot of these guys are well before my time - listening to an old school fan talk about the 1950, 60s and such

I view him as a very selfish ballplayer
He could have taken time off for the betterment of the team - i.e. - rest a day here or a day there - but NOOOOOOO - it was all about him and his 'record'
He should have moved to 3B. It hurt the team - your power #s typically come from 1B, 3B, LF, RF and at times C
But Good Ol Cal didn't want to move to 3rd so a speedster could play SS.
A speedster SS who could have helped the Os - who hit for average and got on base and was a threat on the base paths
Know why he didn't want to move to 3rd?
The Hot Corner takes a bigger toll on the body - and in turn would have jeopardized his 'record'
Selfish
Stop regurgitating the same old bullshit to support your shaky narrative. I love how you think that he was selfish for staying in the lineup while never getting hurt yet Embiid and Simmons miss months of the season when a fly farts in Ghana. The Orioles sucked most of the time he was there and it certainly wasn’t his fault. Serious question - Why engage with him when he's clearly trolling and will therefore ignore any point you can make? I think we all know he had enough sports knowledge to know better than the arguments he makes, and is just looking for a reaction.

Ripken = Simmons/Embiid
Can't we have one thread around here that doesn't involve the Sixers?

Let's get this thread back on track folks Looking forward to players 71-80 Trying to come up with players who don't fall in the juicer/cheater categories, since I've already talked about them. Some I've come up with
Tommy John - 288 wins. Yeah, in 288 seasons Tony Oliva - For the years he was healthy, he was a fantastic player. Lost to the world in Minnesota, even on his own team, always overshadowed by Harmon Killebrew Gil Hodges - Better player than many already in there Lou Whittaker - by any measure, a better SS than Pee Wee Reese Vern Stephens - best hitting SS between Honus Wagner and Cal Ripken (hee hee). Injuries wrecked him (see Dean, Dizzy for example) Bob Johnson - Who? Indian Bob Johnson was a remarkably consistently great hitter. Always good for 25-30 HR's, 100 RBI and hitting over .300. For the shitty A's teams of the 30's. Most underappreciated player in history. Dwight Evans - Dewey had nearly the same stat lines as Jim Rice or Andre Dawson

what's your opinion on Whittaker
do you buy into those opinions that Alan Trammell is one of the reasons why Sweet Lou got so much publicity - and if if you put an Average Joe next to him - Lou would just be considered an above average player - nothing special at all

You know -
Thinking about Greatest Phillies 1st Baseman had me thinking about John Kruk
Now I'm not saying he should be in the Hall; however the title of this thread is 'The Top 100 Players Not in the HOF'
The Krukker was a lifetime .300 hitter and was in 3 All-Star Games
I think he needs a little bit of recognition and consideration for being the Top 100 looking on from the outside....

In a 162 game average.
Whittaker - 17 HR, 73 RBI, .276 BA, 161 H, 81 BB. 6x AS (playing in same league as Yount and Ripken)
Reese - 9 HR, 66 RBI's, .269 BA, 162 H, 90 BB. 10x AS (easily the best NL SS)
Fielding, tough to compare. Reese never had to play on Astroturf, Whittaker played on better maintained infields. And Pee Wee played on better teams. Reese is in, Sweet Lou isn't
Pee Wee had better 2b. Robinson was better than Trammell. Billy Herman, the Dodgers 2b before Jackie, was a good player

Murphy and McGriff would be in mine. It will depend on how this list factors in roiders, Pete Rose, and Shoeless Joe. Assuming they (cheaters) don't make top five id go with these: Dale Murphy Don Mattingly Fred McGriff Thurmon Munson Jeff Kent Three or four of the Black Sox might make the list. Jackson and Ciccote for sure. Buck Weaver and Hap Felsch are possibles. Hal Chase also. The 1877 Louisville Grays threw the pennant race and had two very good players, Jim Devlin and George Hall. One factor, Joe Posnarski does these lists his way. Remember the Top 100 moments in baseball history? I dont remember that list no. I honestly have no clue who this guy is making the list.

Joe Posnarski is a baseball writer for The Athletic.com. Wrote a couple good books, one about the Cincinnati Reds of the 70's, The Machine, and one about Buck O'Neill. I like his work but I disagreed a lot with his 60 greatest moments. Duane Kuiper's one and only HR at #2? Really?
