Just got this on blu-ray. I love this movie so much, it's sort of a more action-oriented Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

I rarely enjoy big US comedies but Midnight Run is an exception.

Had no idea it was a franchise. I can't really picture Chris McDonald in that role, good as he is.

I love Midnight Run. Surely has to be one of the funniest and most well made/acted buddy-cop releases of the late 80s and early 90s, and where the solid chemistry between the main leads is a big part of why it became a big favorite, one which gets better each time I re-watch it. But of course, also another huge reason is that it comes with such a colorful and enjoyable variaty of minor parts. Where you have the great Johh Ashton "Hey, Marvin, Look Out!" and Yaphet Kotto, as the explosive FBI agent Mosley, who always seems to show up a bit far too late to the party, and of course the cold hearted and not very "friendly" Dennis Farina, in probably his most vicious role (at least of those I have seen him):
"I stopped by here to tell you two things. Number one is that you're gonna die tonight. Number two, I'm gonna go home, have a nice hot meal, I'm gonna find your wife and I'm gonna kill her, too."
A shame that De Niro did not do far more of this kind of action comedies, at least back in the 80s, as he was a riot along with Charles Grodin, and still, even for all the funny and action filled events that takes place, Midnight Run also packs a lot of heart, where my favorite moment arrives when Jack Walsh has to "suck it up" and go back to his former wife, in order to beg for help, and suddenly he is greeted by his now grown up teenage daughter, whom have not seen her dad for a very long time. And you can see clearly how shameful Walsh really is, specially when she offers her savings, to help him out.
Anyway, a wonderfully acted and very emotional scene, where Robert De Niro is pure class, and also Grodin, who looks on, as father and daughter gets a rare chance to "catch up" with each other.
I have seen a couple of those DTV/straight to video releases of the Midnight Run "sequels", starring Christopher McDonald, which were pretty forgettable, but not horrible. I kind of liked the first one, at least part of it, probably much to do with the guest stars, and I think it went under the name of: Another Midnight Run (1994), and then followed at least 1 or 2 more, but I guess these where more of a TV-movie "quality" over them.

Damn good movie that unfortunately didn't find its audience. I am just glad it finally found me, back in 2005. Anyway, I guess it is one of those great "hidden" gems, that rarely seems to be getting the same kind of attention or as talked about, as so many other of De Niro's films. Still, I think Midnight Run is deservedly up there, among some of his absolute best stuff that were released in the 80s and 90s.
