I can't say I was a HUUGE fan but I liked some of his movies. "Spring, Summer, ..." is probably my favourite among them. Coincidentally just the other day I re-watched "Rough Cut", which he wrote (but did not direct).
I think I am going to watch "Samaritan Girl" in his honour tonight. I have it in my collection but I have never watched it. He won the Best Director award at the Berlin Film Festival for it back in 2004.

Didn't notice it for a month until it was in my newspaper I did really like some of his works "Samaritan Girl" is good, but not esssential IMO. His 3 best works for me are - "Spring, Summer, ..." - "3-Iron / Bin-Jip" <<< a MUST SEE! - "Seom - the Island" (2000) all 3 essential

That was ... interesting!

Actually "3-Iron" is the one that I ended up watching that day, instead of "Samaritan Girl". That was ... interesting! I remember going to the cinema with my mongolian (ex-)girlfriend in Germany when this movie came out. While I was (totally) mesmerized, she was a bit angry bc she did expect something completely different (as she was used to the usual fluffy Korean TV soap operas). She would later change her opinion as she had been "forced by me" to go to many other arthouse movies - and her taste for this genre grew with the time (luckily... ) . Years later she saw "Spring, Summer, ..." and found it to be very good. (By the way: Bc of her I was "forced" to see commercial stuff as well ) Later I made a proposal to show this movie in our little arthouse club and at the end this was one of those special few movies nobody of the audience left until the credits were completely over. (similar effect had "The Great Beauty" and "Body and Soul" btw.) For me "Bin-Jip"/"3-Iron" is an interesting and unique genre-mix starting a bit like "the EduKators (2004)" and then adding mystery elements like "Lost Highway" and "Wings of Desire". A lesson in awareness, I can watch this masterpiece again and again without getting bored.
