Interesting... I've never heard of chief as a slur. Maybe they should keep the name 'chiefs' and change the logo to a fire truck. In San Diego, douchy male servers at bars call male patrons "chief" all the time. I use ‘chief’ kind of interchangeably as you would ‘pal’ or ‘buddy’ quite often. “What’s goin on, chief?” That sorta thing.

Equating the n-word with the word Redskin really seems kind of dumb to me, but to each their own.

Equating the n-word with the word Redskin really seems kind of dumb to me, but to each their own. If you look up "Redskin" in the dictionary, it says "vulgar" next to it - - and that's been the case for at least 25 years. "Indian" is a completely different story.

It's passed time. If an expansion team today couldn't/wouldn't get greenlit with 'Indians' as its nickname, why should a team be allowed to keep it - just because of 'heritage'.
Side note: I've noticed that Canada/Canadians ditched the term 'Indian' decades ago now, first for 'Native Canadian' & nowadays 'Indigenous'. However, I still read & hear the term 'Indian' used by Americans, including progressive politicians. So if that's why it seems more a surprise in the US, I get it.

What if someone referred to LeBron as that Blackskin basketball player? I didn't say it wasn't offensive, check out my first post on this thread. I just don't think it's up there with the N-word. Let's put it this way, if my honky ass went up to a Native American and called him a Redskin and then I went up to a black man and called him the N-word, I would say the black dude would be more upset. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

Cleveland Krauts or Cleveland Hymies would be more fitting for the makeup of that city.

Canada has a lot of other problems with First Americans, though. I'm not sure if the name change is wiping away a lot of that stuff.

Got to admit, I actually don’t mind this. Hopefully they don’t go back to the Spiders or Blues or Bronchos. I think something like Shoremen, Rockers, or Rollers (or Rock n’ Rollers) or some other kind of nickname that is in reference to something synonymous with the city or region would be much better.

It's still all so confusing. I have no issue with them changing the name, but I was watching the news this morning and they said that some find the name racist, then they flashed back to a representative who was involved in lobbying them to get rid of the logo, and he was with the America Indian Movement.
I think so much of this just comes with a lack of understanding. I don't think tribal people are monolithic and I don't think there's a total consensus on the feeling of sports' team names, but some are offended just by the notion of a team being named after an ethnicity at all. Then the next obvious question is what it means for other teams. Team names like the Seminoles or Blackhawks are specific to certain tribes so that has to be worked out with a smaller group, Chiefs is not a racial name but rather a position of authority that can be found in all manner of places, and the Braves could easily lose all native imagery from their uniforms and not change the name as it could be generic enough to just mean brave people. But I think there is a certain contingent of this that's just white people being offended for others without knowing why or how.
That one guy who said 'there's no such thing as a 'Native American' will always stick with me, as I understand what he is saying, and yet his very point means that others who may seem to fall into the category don't see it that way at all. It's a little more complex than anyone seems to think it is.

They should change it to Cleveland Coonskin and really piss everyone off.
I'm not even from the US but I find this to be idiotic.
They didn't have a problem for 105 years but now everyone is acting butthurt. A bunch of snowflakes.
