They ended because the bullying was getting way out of hand. Like posting your personal information bullying.
Good riddance, I say.

They made no attempt to control the situation--and sometimes I think they exploited the worst of it for the notoriety and hits. Their joke 'administrators' brought the mess on themselves, in large measure, and then proceeded to punish users for their negligence.
All in all, this site is preferable to IMDb's self-created shambles.

I don't miss the general boards, but I do miss the ones for specific movies and TV shows.

Oh well. This is good enough! Me too, I miss it. I always thought one of the reasons was using pornography on the avatars. I suppose they could have done away with the avatars, but I couldn't believe what this one guy was getting away with. His account would be deleted, and 2 minutes later he'd start a new one. Jerk

As an animation fan, nothing will replace the great discussions that used to happen on the individual film boards. It would at least be nice if this place kept a general animation board but the mods here have no animation respect.

IMDb's statement however conveyed an entirely different idea that maintaining their numerous boards for celebrities and individual titles was a burden on their resources. Oh please, hiring people just to moderate forums isn't that big of a burden for an AMAZON owned company?

IMDb's statement however conveyed an entirely different idea that maintaining their numerous boards for celebrities and individual titles was a burden on their resources. Oh please, hiring people just to moderate forums isn't that big of a burden for an AMAZON owned company? Given their format, it would have been difficult to moderate. You had boards for every single movie, actor, best boy, etc., and every day something new was cropping up. It'd be a constant battle with, paradoxically, a lot of downtime for the hired moderators. Even trolls take days off so there would be times where these people had nothing to do. That said, it just came down to not wanting to bother because of the costs for something they viewed as frivolous; not that it was impossible or even all that expensive.

Oh please, hiring people just to moderate forums isn't that big of a burden for an AMAZON owned company? Interesting. And I'm not saying they are lying, but this was back in 2017 or so. A: were they owned by Amazon back then (just asking)? (Edited. Yes, back in 1998). And B it really was the exact height of the bullying by many people of all places Full House! Personal information being shared (personal information that you never disclosed on the board to begin with). Threats of harm and career destroying lies. People making no less than 15 accounts because their bullying kept on getting banned! I gave the company many suggestions about it and that's when I figured out there was no one home. I was so relieved when they pulled the plug in that board function in general. Got this from the Guardian. Feb 17, 2017... In an effort to continually evaluate and enhance the customer experience on IMDb,” the announcement stated, “we have decided to disable IMDb’s message boards on 20 February 2017.” Citing data and traffic and the boards no longer providing a “positive, useful experience” as reasons, the site’s CEO Col Needham later took to the boards to address the finer points of the shutdown, while confirming that all the content posted to the boards will be removed. “Message boards are always temporary in nature,” he wrote. He encouraged users to copy and archive content, if they want to preserve it.

I don't miss the lack of moderation, but I do miss every movie/celebrity having their own board. There was something going on all the time on some board or another. The boards around here (save for the politics board) don't always have a lot going on.
I do understand the old IMDb's moderation problems though. It would have been a lot for even a group of people to handle on a day to day basis. And since new movies and TV shows are always coming out and the database was constantly growing it would have essentially got worse and worse every day. If we hadn't lost the boards in 2017 we would have lost them eventually.

I had a troll from the IMDB dog me around everywhere, even beyond the IMDB. She found my Ebay page and actively encouraged people to buy stuff from me and leave negatives. Then she found out my Facebook name, stole pics from my folders, and began posting as my dead mother. The only thing that got rid of her was when the IMDB got rid of the message board. I was grateful!

It might have worked better if minor subscription fees were paid annually to help assist in the boards moderation. Yes, there would have been a lot of trolls, but when reports were made, it would have been people and not bots responding. Agree absolutely. I wondered aloud on the boards more than once if IMDbPro (the paid subscription forum that carried an annual fee of a bit over $100.00 ) was as prone to uncontrolled trolling. Never got an answer, unsurprisingly--but I'd guess only the most hardcore would pony up the cash to troll, unless they found a way to hack into the site for free.

IMDb in general felt like it was falling apart in the last couple of years leading up to the deletion of the boards, and I'm not just talking about the trolls. I kept encountering error messages many times I went there from 2014 onwards. Like, they would only happen every now and again, but they were there. The interface being really clunky didn't help either. Any updates the site did just seemed to make it worse. In the last weeks, errors would happen like every three or four clicks. The last days were even worse.

I enjoy this site very much, but also miss the original forums. To watch a film that was not just a recent 'blockbuster', and discuss on line immediately after viewing was a joy. Agree the last (few) years was a troll disaster that affected the forum entire. And here we are! :-)

If more people would start individual threads about movies they had just finished watching and get a conversation started, the Film General and Classic Film Boards might get some renewed traffic.
