I used to think he was just a boring, pompous guy who wrote enormously fat books about spies that my dad read. My dad did read his books, and they did tend to be enormously fat and about spies, but I got more interested in him over the last few years. One factor in this was seeing the BBC Smiley's People, which has Alec Guinness at something like his best. Another was reading some of the autobiographical things he published latterly, which he collected as The Pigeon Tunnel, including this piece about his father, the con artist and jailbird: www.newyorker.com/magazine/2002/02/18/in-ronnies-courtBut because I'm easily impressed by these things, it was largely this interview he did on French TV: www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Mlz08xOGe8
