Ferrell nailed the innocent and naive fish out of water vibe that the story called for. I’m not saying Carrey couldn’t have done it but he seems more cynical and sarcastic in most of his prior roles.

I still wouldn't have seen it because I despise them both equally. Will I’ve heard is an asshole in real life. Carrey actually seems decent although he seems a little messed up and really wants socialism so that’s a turn off for me. My mom actually met Carrey at an airport once, she said he was a sweetheart.

I was only talking about them as actors, most of the time I can separate personal beliefs from whether or not I like seeing them onscreen. James Woods is a good example; I can't stand his politics but I love his acting.

Nope, just stated that our opinions about Carrey and his "acting abilities" are different. That's what keeps the world interesting.

Kind of like Stanley Ipkiss or Truman Burbank, I'd imagine.

I think Ferrell plays the man child role better. That's not even that much of a compliment.
Elf has not aged well for me, I stopped watching it years ago.

I didn't think about it until now but it would probably have been directly influenced and compared to the Grinch movie starring Carrey that came out about 3 years prior. 2 Christmas movies in 3 years...and im sure there wouldve been some Grinchesque scenes in Elf, probably to its detriment.
