The last time there was an Arsenal match thread it was originally titled 'Arsenal to end 3 game home slump, surely'
They didn't, so here we are for the fifth time of asking.
Four successive home defeats - with a fifth bordering on the unthinkable. Or maybe not so unthinkable when you consider the opposition. Southampton will arrive with a fully available squad where Arsenal will be missing Xhaka (banned) Bellerin (banned) Partey (injury) while Luiz and Kolasinac both face late fitness tests.
Southampton will arrive off the back of that fine 3-0 battering of - the admittedly abysmal - Sheffield United, enjoying a run of one defeat in ten league games and riding high in 3rd place whereas Arsenal are not even boasting a goal per game average, haven't scored in two, haven't won in five, have lost their last four at home and sit down in 15th spot, five points off the relegation zone.
But let's not pile on the bad news, there's always time for a revival although today Slaven Bilic would tell me to 'go away' or something like that when it came to revivals. Surely, I say, surely, Arsenal will show us something more than just another home defeat and another sending-off. Southampton are proving to be a tough nut to crack but if Man Utd have cracked it recently, anybody can.
There are usually at least two or three goals when these two meet and with Arteta installed as latest favourite in the Sack Race you have to say a defeat here will test even the Arsenal board of directors' loyalty/procrastination.
What an important match this is for Arsenal.
Arsenal 1/1 Southampton 5/2
Draw 5/2

Che Adams wins possession in the centre circle and sends Theo Walcott on his way. His unmolested run takes him into the box where he delightfully chips Leno with the deftest of balls. Walcott doesn't care for sentimentality and duly celebrates a very good finish. Arteta stands arms folded on the touchline, his face a picture of boyish concern, his hair heavily slathered in pomade as the 20 minute minute mark is passed. 0-1 to Southampon.

I’m watching the Savage Dublin Sherwood show.
3 games for the price of one.

There's the Technical Director of Arsenal sitting alone but he's performing a one-man show for himself, gesticulating in a frustrated fashion and shaking his head on '35. You get the idea he's not enjoying what he's seeing here.
But wait, Arsenal have begun to show us something. Aubemayang charges down the left of the area and drives a fierce across in but it's blocked. At last some real intent from an Arsenal player and you ask yourself if they're beginning to truly appreciate the seriousness of their position five minutes before the break.

Ceballos feeds one in to Pepe as Arsenal enjoy a good pressing spell. It's fired toward goal by Pepe but keeper McCarthy is well behind it.

Ref Tierney has blown up just outside the centre circle Arteta strides off, one hand jammed in his pocket, the other arm swinging like an overwrought pendulum. Arsenal looked livelier than they've been in ages in the second part of the half. Southampton have been held back since their goal and this could be an interesting second portion coming up. Nothing-one Saints.

It's a build-up from midfield and the ball goes wide to Saka who twists past three defenders on his way to the box. He released it for a one-two with Pepe but Aberyamang was having none of that and intercepted the pass for his own and rifled past McCarthy for one-all on '52.

Here we go. Gabriel launches himself at Theo Walcott, clawing the Southampton man back. The ref whistles foul. It's a second yellow for Gabriel and he's off with half an hour to play. There was no need. No immediate threat, no reason at all to molest Walcott.

Redmond slides into the area and latches onto a long ball. His effort rebounds off the Arsenal bar. But the game has gone down a gear on Arsenal's part as Arteta makes his tactical adaptions following the dismissal of Gabriel whose stupidity has cost us all a decent second half watch.

And Arsenal come close to nicking it in added time as Rob Holding's head connects with the lofted free-kick into the box. He makes good contact but it sails just too high and comes off the Southampton bar.

It's all over here. Arsenal have ended their home defeat streak and got a point but it might have been all three if Gabriel hadn't committed a silly foul just as Arsenal began the second half in further ascendency. Fair play to Southampton who fully deserved their share of the spoils.

Another shock result! The shock being that Saints failed to win in spite of outplaying the Gunners

Saints fail to take advantage of a 10 man Gunner squad. Their finishing in the box left a lot to be desired.
Next up Liverpool vs Tottenham.
