How do you tell somebody you like he's retarded when it comes to religion, without it destroying a friendship? And I'm not saying his belief in god or the Baptist Church is retarded by itself. To each his own. But this guy just doesn't know history and basic facts about religion.
He's handsome as hell and has a great personality. His major flaw is that he talks too much. But I just met him and he's interesting, so that hasn't annoyed me that much.
So I casually referred to the Baptists as Protestants. And he became enraged and insisted the Baptists are not Protestants. He thinks "Protestant" and "Baptist" are mutually exclusive terms. I told him there is no individual sect labeled "Protestant", that it's a broad term for churches which separated from the Roman Catholic Church during the Reformation. But he was still insulted that I called him a Protestant. Lol. He also threw in the bit about Catholics being a separate religion from Christianity but that's de rigueur among many Protestants (but then again he claims he's not a Protestant. )
I told him to ask his Baptist pastor if Baptists are Protestants, hoping some expert advice will convince him he's wrong. He went to church on Sunday and talked to his pastor. He came back that night defiant because his Pastor told him Baptists are not Protestants.
How do I explain this to him?

Without deep thought, my off-the-cuff definition of protestant is a non-Catholic Christian. Thinking deeply, I don't know that I would consider LDS, JW, Christian Scientists, Scientology. Wikipedia says that Baptists are Protestant, but your friend may have his own definition. My suggestion is to drop the subject unless they bring it up.
I once went to a Christmas pageant and the priest announced that "Jesus is the reason for the season". No!! The concept of presents and celebration at the winter solstice predates Christianity by hundreds, if not thousands of years. There is little doubt in my mind that the priest knew this and was simply promoting Christianity. I kept my mouth shut.

As someone already mentioned, Google could have easily settled this conversation. I get the feeling he doesn't consider Mormons and JWs to be actual Christians either.

He may have a point. "At least some Baptists do not consider themselves "Protestants." This is to emphasize their sense that, insofar as the Protestant Reformation was as a contest between the Roman Catholic Church and reformers who sought to protest certain features of the Catholic Church and to reestablish the Church on what they considered was a purer basis, the Baptists have not entered into that contest. They have rejected the notion of a "universal Church" altogether, admitting the authority of only local organizations, individual communities of believers, and, ultimately, each individual before God. As a result, they have found themselves at odds with the Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church, and mainline denominational Protestantism." teachinghistory.org/history-content/ask-a-historian/22329#:~:text=At%20least%20some%20Baptists%20do%20not%20consider%20themselves%20%22Protestants.%22,the%20Church%20on%20what%20they

Why argue the point? At the end of the day, if he doesn't like the label "Protestant" for his beliefs, that's his call. Not worth falling out over.

I guess you could argue that, though how do you feel about people who are basically atheists but reject the term and insist on calling themselves "agnostic"? I believe that was actually Einstein's stance.

Don’t argue with him. It’s an identity thing, but I’ve never known Baptists...and I know a lot...who don’t think they are not also Protestants. Anyway, there is no official Protestant Church, so who cares.

Since the subject isn't a mater of life or death, sometimes it's just better to avoid certain subjects around some people. You'll find your stress level drops considerably.

Have him type, "are babtists protestants" into google. You can try to teach people but you can't make them learn. He sounds like a bit of a chore.
Edit: I just remembered that poll we had here a ways back asking how you indentify. I was the only person who selected Protestant, which is hilarious and almost certainly not the actual case. Funny though. Maybe people just don't want to be labled Protestant? Who knows.

Seems like all you would need to do is point him to do some research.
I didn't know they were the same thing either until this thread and then I Googled it and it seems you are at least mostly correct.
From Google.

There are ways to say things without coming off like an asshole and potentially ruining a friendship though. You could also just refrain from discussing religion if you think it will cause too many issues.

Sounds like he's not interested in unity of being, just diversity labeling/tagging and wanting some sort of recognition and endorsements for his own deluded religious beliefs. Just f<>k him and then cast him aside. Make him know how it felt like to be Jesus....
