When this Crichton adaptation released in 1998 it tanked at the box office and was torn apart by critics and unlike other sci fi flops like John Carpenter’s The Thing or Event Horizon hasn’t seem to have gotten any kind of cult following. Hell I even see it show up in some “worst of” lists! Always thought that was strange as i always liked this film. It’s like a mix of Forbidden Planet and The Abyss. Has a great tense and foreboding atmosphere, terrific underwater cinematography, an A list cast giving their A game and strong production values. I also read the Crichton book and the film is very faithful. Probably one of the most faithful adaptations you can think of. Sphere is one of the most underrated sci films and best adaptations of Crichton’s work

That was probably the problem, film is a very different medium from literature and trying to cram an entire novel into a two hour movie is probably just gonna make the plot feel rushed. There's a reason why so many authors hate movies based on their books, movies tend to take quite a few creative liberties from the source (Stephen King hated Kubrick's Shining adaptation)

I haven’t seen it since it came out in movie theaters, so I might feel differently if I watched it today, but I remember being disappointed by the 2nd half of the movie, which seemed to go nowhere, was slow, and left questions unanswered.

What was it about again? Seeing Samuel L Jackson playing another doomed guy who you wonder what the fuck he's doing under the sea in the first place is probably why I sometimes mistake Sphere for the Deep Blue Sea.

I didn't really like it but I don't think it's 'worst of the year' material. For better or worse, the movie actually isn't that dissimilar to the book. I would have liked it if they showed the squid attack on-camera.

Me too. I remember nothing about the film other than feeling disappointed. I've never even considered giving it a rewatch.

I saw it at the theater back in the day and liked it. I watched it again a few years ago and still thought it was good. It has a lot of atmosphere in my opinion and is sufficiently creepy. The cast is pretty good.

I always liked it too. Particularly the casting.

I remember liking it a lot, but I was probably 8 or 9 years old when I watched it. Due for a rewatch to say the least

It's certainly a better movie than 'Event Horizon.'

I like the movie, the casting, and as vegalyra well pointed, the atmosphere.

Haven't seen it in a long time but I've always liked the film and I never understood the hate.
Honestly, I prefer it to The Abyss.
