Seemed to work for me at least. I mean no one in the old black and white american films actually talked like a normal human being i think. So it seemed to fit in with the material or ... ya i don't know what i'm talking about really...

I didn't find his accent very convincing.

I think the Sunday Times movies on TV guide says something like "Do not adjust your sets... Only your ears" 😁. Never bothered me at all and I rate the movie a seminal noir 9/10.

It's the sole reason I haven't yet been able to make it all the way through that film, which is a regret. I hate for something like that to be the cause for forsaking a film most agree is a very interesting one, but it strikes me as aggressive, intrusive and grating.
I can't say anything about how accurate it may be, because I'm no expert on Irish accents, but it sounds to me very much like Barry Fitzgerald.

I was thinking that it seemed to fit the story which, although entertaining, certainly wasn’t 100% believable.

I could say the same about Daniel Craig's accent in Knives Out (2019) dir: Rian Johnson, though I did make it to the end (and enjoyed the movie nonetheless). Quiz question: from which 1940s Brit Noir did Rian Johnson "borrow" the principal twist?

I haven't seen it yet but in Ferry To Hong Kong he chose to interpret the movie as a comedy and acted out of sync with everyone else.

Is there an Irish actor who might have done that part at that time? Who might you have picked?
It is an interesting movie with interesting plot twists and visuals.

Another problem -- in spite of being a real-life married couple (OK, the relationship was disintegrating anyway) there's almost no sexual chemistry with Rita .. she shows more with film hubby Everett Sloane.
And Orson doesn't do physicality very well -- in the courtroom fistfight he throws a punch like a girl.
Maybe he should have just directed and had Glenn Ford play 'Michael the Sailor' -- now HE and Hayworth would have tons of chemistry left over from GILDA.

I'm so out of touch with 21st century films that I not only don't know the twist, I've never heard of the picture!

Welles' accent used to be a major distraction for me but now I find it part of the film's charm. Same could be said for a blonde Rita.
P.S. Knives Out is well worth a look, Craig's outrageous accent is fun and the "political message" in the film doesn't get in the way.
