Pretend you’ve never seen JP before. The buildup and suspense is very well done. Obviously though once you’ve seen it a hundred times the effect won’t be there as much The effects still hold up. Im more specifically talking about the lackluster characters. Grant is a bit boring and wooden. The kids are forgetable. The woman is forgettable. Attenborough is passable. The lawyer is bland. Malcolm is the only one with some sort of charisma. I think its more the case of miscasting. If they had given these roles to better actors we mighta got more likeable characters.

Sam Neill isn't the best actor if you have ever seen his audition for James Bond he's so wooden in that. Nice guy in real life I'm sure but he's a dull actor. Not sure the character of Alan Grant was written to be exciting in the first place.
