Okay, we all know the "History" in the History Channel is a joke. Ancient Aliens, Curse of Oak Island, Pawn Stars, Ice Fucking Road Truckers. The history on THC is history, been gone for a while. Was just flipping and seen a little tidbit between advertisement. Said (to paraphrase), "On December 24th-25th, 1914, The German and Russian soldiers in the trenches stopped fighting, mingles, played football..."
Of course, the Christmas Truce was on the Western Front. It happened, but without the Russians. The channel isn't even trying anymore '

The decline of the History Channel was no accident. It's owned by A&E Networks which for a time was run by one Nancy Dubuc who spearheaded the programming shift from educational content to reality tv or pseudo-intellectual garbage. Ice Road Truckers, Duck Dynasty, etc. was all her doing. This lady right here.
And it was all for ratings. From a BusinessWeek puff piece about the content shift:
“Think back to when it was mostly World War II documentaries and that type of content,” says Gibbs Haljun, a managing director at MEC, a media-buying agency. “They’ve really pushed the envelope and brought in a broader audience.”
And yes, Nancy Dubuc couldn't give less of a shit if she tried.
"...Dubuc brushes off the critique: “At the end of the day we’re not an education resource. We’re an entertainment brand.”
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At one time, it was WWII, 24/7. "The Hitler Channel". But there are thousands of good documentaries that don't deal with WWII. Wasn't there a History Channel 2 at one time?
It's really pathetic when they try to shoehorn history into a non-history show. A tiny little historical fact in between someone selling a Willie Mays jersey and that moron Chumlee shooting a gun. Whee

Yes, there was a second channel. But I think it morphed into the American Heroes Channel which isn't bad and it does cover actual historical topics.

Did you know The History Channel once aired Scarface (1983)? No idea why, but there you go.

Well, that pattern had precedence with the Discovery Channel & The Learning Channel years & years prior yes?
I remember back in the day early 90's being glued to TLC's The Practical Guide to the Universe. Now, I think they air screaming brides & rich ppl doing stuff.
As for The History Channel, I'm not sure it would survive the TV wilderness with mini series about Napoleon or the history of the spice trade. At the end of the day, TV is nothing but an ad revenue bowl.

What bothered me more than shows like Ancient Aliens or Pawn Stars or American Pickers or Swamp People even being a thing is that History Channel ran it to the fucking ground. They'd air those shows like three to four hours a day every other day. It got ridiculous.

I had some hope left with that Knights Templar show that aired a few years ago. But it was such a bore! I never got into Vikings.

I wonder if part of the problem is they fall in love with shows that can be made on the cheap, relatively, & air for multiple seasons & become rerun filler. I do appreciate stuff like their 'Cars that Built America' or the 'Chocolate Wars'(?) long form shows. I watch Curse of Oak Island, mostly because it's kinda relaxing in a Sunday night (Canadian airtime) way. The key to its enjoyment for me - those guys would be pouring time & millions into that venture with or without the cameras (their million dollar crews digging mass holes are barely on camera, it's not about making sure the money is on screen pardon the pun). They aren't playing it like a reality tv show, for them it is their reality - the 'war room' stuff is merely expositional to help keep things contextual, for both them & viewers.

I know that I am probably a minority here in my opinions... But, I actually enjoy The Curse of Oak Island... And I think it perfectly belongs on a "History" Channel... I know that some of the theories about the island sound quite a bit outrageous, but I do learn some history from when those theories are discussed... And then, without the 225 year old mystery of "The Money Pit", the team would never have discovered the 1740s "French Water Battery"(?) buried in Smith's Cove, or that Oak Island was once two islands until 1220 AD, when they were joined together, and that part of the Swamp was seriously "manipulated" again, sometime between 1220 AD and 1740... There were several serious big things going on at Oak Island, throughout HISTORY, that until recently, no one had any records of... How could no one know about it being two islands, or the French building a "Water Battery" back in 1740?So, yes, as noted by another poster... Yes, The Curse of Oak Island is a modern "reality" show... But it is one that is revealing a huge long lost chapter of history, that should have always been in North American History Books... And they're not done digging and investigating yet... A Sunken Spanish Ship... A French Fort... A Suspected British Encampment... and possibly other events involving: Knight Templar Visitation, Aztec Treasure, Royal Jewels, Pirate Treasure, Original Written Manuscripts... And some part of someone's Treasure that may have been used to help fund The American Revolution... Jesus Christ... Two Tiny little islands in a remote part of the world that most civilizations didn't even know existed, suddenly became, probably, the " First Grand Central Station" of it's kind, involving EVERYONE's secrets... And NO ONE knew about it? until just a few years ago? A Huge Part of the World's History... That is NOW being told... on The "History" Channel.

Well they always claim it is about ratings. I believe TLC and some others like BET also went crass (Animal Planet started airing hunting shows--I mean come on-a minority hunts--why on earth would you cater to a minority and alienate a majority?). It's like some old politician who cannot fill a parking lot somehow winning an election with more votes that anyone in history.

I guess I can't blame the networks. People must watch this, though I cannot imagine why.
