Not sure if you're trolling or not, but that's not quite true. For example take something like Charlie Kaufman's Anomalisa, which is considered animated but certainly isn't a cartoon. Why would I be trolling for expressing my opinion? I simply can't take these cartoon movies seriously. Never have, never will. That's perfectly fine to have that opinion, it's just that the way you're being somewhat combative about it seems trollish.

Oh, well aren't we the epitome of "mature". Also, animation does not always mean "cartoons". Animated movies is just another term for cartoon movies, IMO. They are basically cartoons. Then why did you use quotations marks in your first post? Wasn't it sarcasm? Was not an indirect way of saying that animated movies are not cartoons?

Was not an indirect way of saying that animated movies are not cartoons? I used quotations marks to refer to animated movies as cartoons. I have always referred to them as cartoons. There's no sarcasm. Anyways, I'm not going to argue about this further. I have clearly stated my opinion about this and I don't like to repeat myself. That's what I think and nobody in the world can change my opinion about it.

A lot of 70s and 80s animated films were either depressing or downright horrifying. I'm surprised any of us kids from that generation came out even semi normal. The crazy thing was our parents thought it was okay for us to watch them. haha
Watership Down - just how many rabbits can meet bloody ends?
Secret of Nimh - actually just about every Don Bluth animated film is depressing or has a depressing aspect to it
Fox and the Hound - Foxes and hounds can never be friends. What does this tell people?

I saw Bambi when I was a kid, but for some reason the killing of his mother didn't affect me.
Dumbo meeting his incarcerated mother still destroys me.
The Plague Dogs: I read the book prior to seeing the movie and expected the film to follow the novel, but I was not prepared for the final devastating scene on the beach, which altered the last chapter (for the better). As the credits rolled, I had to remain in my theatre seat until the audience was almost gone because I didn't want anyone to see the tears in my eyes.
Toy Story 3: the scene in the incinerator and the final moments on Molly's porch never fail to move me, no matter how many times I see the movie.

Grave of the Fireflies for sure. Ill also nominate the Futurama episode Jurassic Bark. I'm a Futurama fan but refuse to watch that one. They really could have ended it differently.

I was HOPING I would have the honor of mentioning this one before everyone else. To most I have to say, you're amateurs. If you REALLY want depressing, there's only one answer.
Barefoot Gen.
Even MORE depressing than Grave of the Fireflies.

You don't know anything about Japanese animation then.

ALL of the Peanuts animated films are off of my watch list ... watching Charlie Brown being bullied and ridiculed by EVERYONE, including his dog, is too much like reality !
Gave away all of the books too !

Even MORE depressing than Grave of the Fireflies. I would put three up against it. The Cat who Walked by Herself for its red book scenes which are more disturbing on a large scale and two others for their bleak endings: Angel's Egg and Sea Prince and the Fire Child which ends with a much bleaker variation on Romeo and Juliet's finale.

Nobody ever mentions it, but Sarah and the Squirrel (1982) is easily the most depressing animated movie I've ever encountered. Depressed the hell out of me as a kid.
It's about a little girl whose family gets taken by the Nazis during World War II (the implication being that they're either in a concentration camp or have been murdered) and struggles to survive alone in the wilderness.
Part of me wants to watch it again someday, but I expect it to depress me even more as an adult.

I can't really recall if I could say I have seen an animated film that is depressing, but I have seen many sad ones. Watership Down - 78' has depressing themes, but not overtly depressing as a whole.

Animated movies that would appeal ONLY to children but have to be rated anything other than G because the makers could not resist adding non-kid-appropriate references

Mary & Max Persepolis
Both are good movies, though. The first is considered claymation, but it's not "animated".
