Just watched it again last night. Very playful, tongue-in-cheek updating of the classic tale for the 80s.
Bill Murray is in top form here. Easily his third best movie after Groundhog Day and Ghostbusters. A funny movie that actually has moments of genuine emotion.
Richard Donner really was on a roll back in the 80s.

Bill Murray is funny as usual and the movie has a couple scenes that work very well, but the overall script is lousy.

Roger Ebert nailed some of the reasons it doesn't work. I like it more than he did, but his first paragraph I mostly agree with. “Scrooged is one of the most disquieting, unsettling films to come along in quite some time. It was obviously intended as a comedy, but there is little comic about it, and indeed the movie’s overriding emotions seem to be pain and anger. This entire production seems to be in dire need of visits from the ghosts of Christmas." www.rogerebert.com/reviews/scrooged-1988

I enjoy reading/watching Ebert's old reviews, even though I frequently find myself disagreeing with him. Although I will concede that Murray's final speech is far from the greatest piece of written monologue and I'm not entirely convinced about that ending.

I disagree with him that Bill Murray isn't funny in it and I think the first 1/3 of the movie is effective, but much of movie comes off as mean-spirited. The ghosts of Christmas past and present are unpleasant assholes for example. The movie is too at odds with the source material imo. The stuff with Bobcat Goldthwait is suppose to be comedic, but is too unpleasant to be funny. I rate it 5/10.

I understand where you're coming from when you talk about mean-spiritedness, but I just accept that as part and parcel of the comedic slapstick violence that's common to a certain type of comedy ranging from Tom and Jerry to Home Alone.

Lee Majors in “The Night the Reindeer Died”
Kills me every time.
“You know what they say about treating people bad on the way up?”
“Yeah, you get to treat them bad on the way down. You get two opportunities.”

It works in cartoons and Home Alone, because those understand how to balance different types of humor and the context is also different.

Imagine if it didn’t have his humor how bad it could have been? Oh, it could have been awful. The only movie I don't like Bill Murray in is What About Bob? One of the most irritating and unfunny performances I have ever seen.

He carries this film on his back. It could have been a bad film with a lesser comedian. I always felt like it was written with him in mind. No one else could have played it the way he did, it suited his style perfectly. I own this one and enjoy the cynical humor and the less cynical ending. Not as good as the classic story, but I think the modern twist works. When you see all the ghosts together at the end, it wraps it up nicely.

Personally I love it but I know it's a film many people hate for whatever reason.

I always loved this movie, but as a kid I didn't understand a LOT of it especially where the ghosts were concerned.

I also think they were mean-spirited because that was the only thing Murray's Frank would respond to. He himself was the most mean-spirited character in the film. The ghosts were the only characters Frank wasn't able to bully. I personally loved the ghost of Christmas past. He was my favorite character in the film.
