Now that it seems to be cool to dunk on Christopher Nolan and his movies, does that make Denis Villeneuve the new beloved “auteur” director as far as the Internet is concerned? Obviously, Villeneuve has never had the commercial success that Nolan has had, but when it comes to directors for big studio sci-fi movies, I can’t think of anyone else who has a devoted fanbase.

JJ Abrams? J.J. Abrams isn’t exactly an Internet darling at this point either. I suppose he has a fanbase, but I don’t really see him getting showered with praise. Plenty of people seem to think he’s a hack.

There remains just one Christopher Nolan in my opinion. I’m glad to see Villeneuve gain more attention though.

Maybe, although (as you pointed out) Villeneuve is not as mainstream as Nolan. Hard to top a guy that directed a comic book trilogy (and a very popular/successful one at that) when it comes to a director’s pop culture footprint.
I do find it a little startling how much animosity people have towards Nolan now. I know Tenet hasn’t been as well received as his other movies, but it seems like people were already starting to turn post-Interstellar, and that was a huge hit with the masses.
