That other thread getting bumped reminded me of this. I watched it a few days ago and loved it. It's a different, darker story. For example there is no Gaston, and the Beast was previously married. The version I watched was dubbed in English, but it was barely noticeable. I'd like to see it in the original French with subtitles, just cause I think French is a beautiful language and hearing this in the original tongue would add to its loveliness.
The 1991 animated film is still the version to beat IMO, but I actually prefer this one to Disney's live action film.

I liked this one too, but I would still watch the Disney live action movie over it. It is very different, but good different.

Beauty and the Beast is not a Disney story to begin with.
I haven't seen the 2014 version, but it sounds like a remake of the 1946 movie.

I liked this one too, but I would still watch the Disney live action movie over it. It is very different, but good different. Disney's live action was visually stunning, but I hated Emma Watson as Belle. Nothing against her personally, but I just feel she was miscast and didn't bring the sense of wonder to the character the 91 version had. I also hated Beast's CGI. Not a bad film by any means, but it doesn't rank as high as some of the other ones.

It just goes through the motions and the script is already laid out by the 1991 movie beforehand.

Interesting she thought the Beast was holding the prince captive. I've never seen that included in any screen version of the story. I knew it was one of the old fairy tales, but didn't know the story. Thanks for the link.

I enjoyed the music sequences on the big screen very much. I dunno, there was just something kind of "meh" about the overall story. It didn't have the magic the 91 film has. OTOH, I LOVED the live action Cinderella, and it remains my favorite of the live action films.

Very close to the Disney character. Was it her acting you didn't like?

I also don't care for Dan Stevens as the Beast. Chemistry is so important in a movie like this and the characters just don't have much chemistry in the remake.

Cinderella is the only good live-action remake that Disney has made at this point. My favorite of the Disney live-action remakes is The Jungle Book. Good writing, but the child actor is terrible and the directing and visual look of the movie is bland imo. It has great cgi, but the movie has very little style and no emotional impact. The movie lacks personality and heart, like most of Jon Favreau's movies. He is a by the numbers director who got lucky with Iron Man. The only scenes I truly like are the scene with King Louis and the scene with Kaa.

I really liked The Lion King and rank it behind Cinderella and Pete's Dragon (I know everyone hated Pete's Dragon, I'm an outlier). There were a few things I thought could be done better, but to me they kept the heart of the original film. I wish they could have brought back more of the original voice actors. I HATED Aladdin. I doubt I'll ever watch that one again, such a missed opportunity. Have you seen Mulan yet? It wasn't the epic adventure I was expecting. I also had a hard time believing anyone would mistake the lead for a man, even in armor with her hair up. I feel like they should have chosen an actress that could pull off an androgynous look better. I enjoyed it, but glad I waited till it came to Disney Plus.

It is almost insulting how lazy the movie is. Aladdin is quite bad too. I have no interest in watching The Lion King remake. I forgot about Pete's Dragon. I am a fan actually.

And I think would have preferred old school costuming and make-up as opposed to a CGI beast. Then again, Vincent Castle played it so well in the film I posted, I hardly cared, so you may be on to something there.

It did feel lazy, that's a good word. The Mulan story could have been taken way beyond the Disney cartoon, and they played it safe. I was also annoyed that they went in that direction and then made no reference to Mushu, but used the Phoenix instead. I still think it's worth a watch.
