One of the most spectacularly average movies I've ever seen.
Is this just another Cold Mountain?

I think it came out at just the right time, with its message of communication "communicating" (hey-o) with a lot of people. Don't get me wrong, it is well made and acted, I just didn't think it was as original as people made it out to be. It's essentially The Day The Earth Stood Still for linguists.

It has great score, great cinematography and manages to build spooky atmosphere and tension, it's a bit of a thinker as you're watching it. But ultimately I felt the movie suffered from being butchered with an infuriating ending which misses the whole point of the material its based on. And it's a little silly too. But a good 7/10 I'd say.

i like that it was a serious Sci Fi premise without a lot of explosions and nonsense. i like explosions and nonsense just fine but it feels like it's hard to come across thoughtful Sci Fi anymore.
i didn't really love the movie though. it was average or maybe just above.

I agree, though I did enjoy the movie for the most part. Sci-Fi can be a quiet, slow, unsettling and thought-provoking way to tell a story...but too often it's just spaceships blowing up. I liked the dissection of language and communication, but didn't really buy the military defector or the ending as a whole. It did the job sci-fi should, encouraging the viewer to actually think about what they're seeing rather than give in to the impulse to blow it up. For me, it was mostly a powerful and intriguing watch...until the ending. I think they might have screwed the pooch there.

Ex Machina was great sci-fi. Arrival was just a very unimaginative film. It did a great impression of being cerebral sci-fi without actually being cerebral in the slightest. Examine it more closely and you'll discover that the film is about nothing. Nothing.
