I would say a movie where the old man and young woman is used in a stupid way is the movie Mank (2020) where Gary Oldman is married to Tuppence Middleton in the movie. Gary Oldman is 29 years older than Tuppence Middelton and they play the real life people Herman and Sara Mankiewicz who where the same aga in fact Sara was 2 months older than Herman. In this movie i would have preferred if they either found an actor closer to the age of Tuppence Middelton or an actress closer to the age of Gary Oldeman.
There are probably other examples i could use i guess, but that is the movie i am using as an example.

Also, even though 35-year-old Amanda Seyfried isn't playing a love interest, she's still treated as a female co-lead.

She's right. And I'm glad that she's looking at it from an equality point of view as opposed to saying age gaps in general are gross (yes, some people do that). Well, where Thompson is concerned, she would be lucky enough to get anyone to sleep with her. The sexual dynamic of a far older woman with a younger man, compared to an older man with a far younger woman is not about equality of representation, just gender mores that are attributed to the differences in the sexes. That is just the nature of being born male or female. Then there is a different dynamic again between same sex couplings on screen, which is where the real inequality lies. It’s all about the straight. You sound bitter...

As someone said earlier; its biologically nature. The vast majority of relationships in the world are where the man is older than the women. Mens sexual market value improves as they get older whilst a womans declines mainly due to fertility. Emma Thompson should look elsewhere for something to complain about.

Yes, when I read that, it seemed like someone has told him "You would be lucky enough to get anyone to sleep with you" in the past and he wants to repeat that to as many women as possible.

Mank would probably be no older than forty something and I’m assuming the wife character is supposed to be thirty’s to forty’s.

My point again is that a movie isn’t concerned about the actual ages. They are supposed to be close enough. For all we know in the movie they are playing characters the same age. Oldman being twenty years old than his costar is irrelevant if they aren’t that in the film.

I assume that often when the actor is significantly older, his character is meant to be somewhat younger. For instance, Cary Grant was in his early 50s when he played John Robey in To Catch A Thief, but in the book Robey is 35. And when Fred Astaire played Jarvis Pendleton in Daddy Long Legs, again I assumed he’s meant to be considerably younger than his actual age (in the book Jarvis is 14 years older than Judy, not 32 years older). A rare instance of an actress playing a younger character is Katherine Hepburn in Desk Set, where I assume both she and Spencer Tracy are meant to be younger than their actual ages.
