In the spirit of the “what did you just watch” and “what are you reading” threads.
Last night I was listening to a New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes episode with John Stanley as Holmes. The program originally starred Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Holmes and Watson. Tom Conway replaced Rathbone for 1947 and then was replaced with Stanley. Alfred Shirley replaced Bruce. (Confusing enough?)
The episode was an adaptation of one of Arthur Conan Doyle’s best Holmes tales, “The Adventure of the Illustrious Client,” which pits the Great Detective against one of his wickedest adversaries, Austrian wife-killer Adelbert Gruner. It was genuinely excellent for most of its length—but petered out to an anticlimactic ending. Too bad. Still, it was fun, and even though Stanley was clearly chosen because his voice was remarkably similar to Rathbone’s, he was a first-class Holmes. (Alfred Shirley, alas, was not half the Watson Bruce was.)
How about you?

The last thing I listened was an episode of The Saint "Nineteen Santa Clauses" but then I realized I had heard it before.

Hitchhiker's Guide.
Honestly, once it gets to Tertiary, it excels in sound quality but it drops off in story quality for me.

On Christmas Eve, I listened to Lionel Barrymore as Scrooge. A very fine show. I can see why he had a great reputation as an actor.

On Christmas Eve (after viewing the annual IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE), I always listen to the Suspense episode with Robert Taylor:
"The House in Cypress Canyon" (can scare the bejeebers out of you)

Jim Backus does o) ne of the background voices when the Milk man is attacked. And Howard Duff is the detective (named 'Sam") who the real estate agent tells the tale to. Duff would shortly thereafter portray 'Sam Spade' on the radio series.

The other day I listened to two comedies on Radio Classics, The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show’s “The Song Writers” and Our Miss Brooks’ “Rival Football.” I’m not usually big on radio comedies—and I don’t usually like Our Miss Brooks at all—but both of these were fast-paced and very funny.

I wasn't aware there had been a radio version of Our Miss Brooks.
I read it was on at the same time as the tv show and continued one year after the tv show ended.

I have an episode of The Life of Riley playing in the background, and it isn’t good, but I find it interesting because the jokes that work best are those that out of context don’t even sound like jokes. In particular: “Well, I’m putting up the dough for it” and “Let’s be gay.”
The first is Junior saying he’s paying for Riley’s education, spoofing the parent-child relationship; the second is Digby O’Dell the friendly undertaker, intoning in his sepulchral voice.
Therein lies an important lesson for aspiring joke writers.

In the mid-1950s, John Gielgud (Holmes) and Ralph Richardson (Watson) performed several of Doyle's short stories on BBC radio. I have a few of them on cassette and shared a couple with my high school Mystery and Science Fiction high school students back in the day.

A BBC Radio adaptation of Marnie. A lot shorter and less melodramatic than the film version.
