Controversial stand-up comic Jackie Mason has passed away at age 93. I'm too damn lazy to detail his life and career, except to say that my favorite rabbi never liked his material, which was far from being as liberal as he (my rabbi) was. You can read all about him on Wiki.

Inventor and TV infomercial pioneer Ronald Popeil passed away yesterday at the age of 86. I figure this post belongs here because, for those of us who watched classic films and TV shows in the pre-cable, pre-home video era, his commercials for his company, Ronco, were an integral part of the show for many viewers. His commercials pitched such products as the Veg-O-Matic and its successor, the Dial-o-Matic ("Slices! Dices! Makes julienne fries!"); the Egg Scrambler (for those cooks too inept to scramble eggs with a simple fork); the Popeil Pocket Fisherman (in case you happened to be passing by a body of water and had a sudden urge for trout); the Smokeless Ashtray; the Mr. Microphone (immortalized in the classic "Radio Bart" episode of The Simpsons); and the Mr. Dentist (the commercial urged, "Buy one for your dog, too! " accompanied by footage of an uncomfortable-looking dog having his teeth cleaned with this device). Mr. Popeil was known for featuring the excited catchphrase "But wait! There's more!" uttered in many of these ads. His concept of the "as seen on TV" products live on today, and many of the products themselves can still be located at countless garage sales, in basements, etc., many of them used once or less before being shoved to the backs of closets and cupboards. The commercials were kind of fun, though. R.I.P.
