Yes, I love sweet potatoes.
I'm curious to know how the ones you tried were cooked. Often, especially around the holiday season, popular recipes call for marshmallows, orange juice, and other ingredients.
I think that they have the appropriate amount of sweetness, on their own ... and, I don't have a huge sweet-tooth. I like them steamed, and served with butter, salt/pepper to taste. A small sprinkle of thyme, or other herb is fine. But, I like them as plain as possible.

I tried those once, tasted like corn dog batter.
I love sweet potatoes, but I didn't start eating them until I was in my 20s, every year my mom makes the marshmallow casserole for Thanksgiving, I didn't like them...they needed more syrup. I love them now. I also love just throwing one in the oven and baking it, or on the grill. They also turn out well sliced and put in a pressure cooker. Another great way to have them, you slice them, halve the slices, put them in a bag with olive oil and French's fried onions, lay them out on parchment on a cookie sheet, bake them for 20-25 minutes, turn them, bake another 25, when they start to get black that's when they're ready, put salt on them and they are sooooooooooo good.

Sweet potatoes are fantastic, either as oven fries or mashed.

Yes. Best are purple Stokes sweet potatoes roasted for at least an hour.
Regular sweet potatoes and yams are usually fine, though not consistently good. Don't care for the fries as they don't work well with oil and salt, for me, anyway.
People mash and candy them up for Thanksgiving with brown sugar, marshmallows and butter, and sometimes pecans.

Yes, I like them best baked, then add a little butter and maybe a dash of cinnamon. Some sweet potato fries/tots are good, some are not.

Absolutely. My favourite way is with butter, brown sugar and cinnamon and baked until there's some crunch to them (egads NO marshmallows). Not something you can have too often. I'll regularly have them mashed with a bit of butter and/or olive oil and salt although on their own is fine too. Cut into fries is ok once in a long while but nothing special.

Yes, I love sweet potatoes. I just bake them and add salt, pepper and butter. But OrsonSwelles way sounds good. Might try it that way next time I have them. "with butter, brown sugar and cinnamon and baked until there's some crunch to them"

I boil them until just cooked through then slice them up (just under a half centimetre or a quarter inch thick) and layer in a pan (overlapping the slices), add bits of butter, the cinnamon and brown sugar and bake to desired crispiness.
