The man always seems to go to ridiculous lengths when it comes to making his movies, and the entire production on the Avatar sequels seems to be the latest example of that.

Christopher Nolan also comes to mind.

There's more to movies than the best technology and cool visuals.

There's more to movies than the best technology and cool visuals. Obviously. I wasn’t asking if he was the best director alive.

Cameron is the most innovative in terms of exploring cinematic technology.
Robert Zemeckis also comes to mind (better director than Cameron but not the technology expert like Cameron is).
Cameron built the CGI department at ILM and also was an early proponent of motion capture, for better or worse.

I would have to say yes, although Christopher Nolan is not too far behind. To spend over ten years preparing 4 sequels is an incredible undertaking.

"Sup, computer bros. How's that computer shit coming?" *Plops feet on table* "Yo Worthington, big emotional scene right here." *Worthington yawns* "Perfect, print it." *Works on some new script pages, xeroxes copies of Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World* "Thou wouldst be great, art not without ambition...cuz."

He hasn't directed a film for 11 years and he's banking on Avatar as a franchise.
I don't if I'd call him ambitious or fucking stupid.

For all his considerable talents, I think Cameron is something of a dumbass.
AVATAR was perfectly fine as a "One and Done" feature... There is no need -- and no audience demand -- for sequels, especially some 11+ years (and counting) later.
Just think of all the time and effort Cameron has wasted on the AVATAR sequels... These are lost years, time in which he could have brought forth at least one or two (maybe more) original films.
He's blown it.

I always thought if he was genuinely interested in making a franchise, he should had gotten the first sequel out by 2012, no later than 2014. The blockbuster landscape is far more competitive now than when the first movie was released.

It kept getting delayed because he was reportedly trying to perfect the technology.

It's hard to measure who has the most ambition. A low to no budget film maker would probably struggle more than Cameron to bring his vision to life. I'd say most directors are as ambitious as each other. They have a vision and they bring it to life.

No one can truly measure a director’s actual ambition. Sorry but this is a bit of a pointless topic.
