Saw this a few weeks ago. I think it's enjoyable though on the lesser end for Disney, which was par for the course with their early 00s work.

Depends on your experience with them I guess. Not all animated Disney films are musicals, even before this.

It’s one of their most underrated movies.

Haven't seen it in years to my Disney boycott. I liked it the first time but on a rewatch it wasn't as good. The characters aren't as interesting the second time through.

It's not one of Disney's best animated films. I admire the visual style and its retro adventure feel, but the storyline feels uninspired. The characters had some charm to them thanks to their quirky personalities. However, Rourke was pretty much cut from the same cloth as Donovan from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. It was also weird that the Atlanteans forgot how to read their own language and use their own technology.

I don't think I've ever seen him playing a bad guy apart from this.

Wasn't that one of the last traditional animation films they made before they went full Pixar? Quite a few Disney animated films from this era (early 2000s) were rather forgetable, I guess Disney was putting more effort into their CG films.

I think Home on the Range was their last one for a few years and then they did The Princess and the Frog.

They made a few more 2D animated films after Atlantis.

Yes. It’s not some greatest-of-all-time movie, but I’m definitely a fan.

The early 2000s is one of my favorite eras of Disney, even if the films didn't always work. This one was middle of the road but I respect the attempt. Lilo & Stitch and Treasure Planet were easily the best of the era and, imo, this was the last genuinely creative and risk filled era of Disney. And that's coming from someone who absolutely adores Tangled. They could have done so much more too had they not had cold feet. Brother Bear should have been better, Home on the Range was ok but had more potential with it's original conception, and cancelled ideas (Kingdom of the Sun, My Peoples, Wild Life) should have been made. Still though, even with the flaws, I'll take Disney of that time over whatever they've become now.

What was the original concept?

What was the original concept? The original story starred an actual cowboy not a cow and was more supernatural. The actual film that got make only kept the villain in tact, but even he was a ghost in the original concept.

What was the original concept? It originally started out as a supernatural western loosely based on Captains Courageous. The usual story centered on a spoiled kid who is sent to the West, gets separated from his family, and falls into a cattle drive where he learns to man up. Then, it became a story about a little horse named Bullets who saves a herd from villainous ghost cowboys led by Alameda Slim. His evil plan is to drive cattle herds off cliffs and into their deaths in revenge for having been trampled to death.
