League Cup semi-final action - Brentford sit 4th in The Championship and are unbeaten in the league in fifteen games. They most recently saw off 3rd place Bournemouth. Their route to the semis has been tough and impressive: Wycombe (h) Southampton (a) West Brom (a) Fulham (h) Newcastle (h) Tottenham sit 4th in their league and coach Mourinho has described this game as his most important since arriving. Given the fact that the other semi is the Manchester derby, and both sides may want to rest key personnel in the midst of a challenge for title honours - A win for Brentford might see them with a strong chance at a significant piece of silverware. Really, they should be in the EPL this season, and they more than likely will be in 21/22

Paul Doyle's Preamble.
*Let's have a look.
Reading won it in 1941 beating Brentford in the final. And Brentford came back a year later to win the trophy, beating Portsmouth. It's something of a misnomer because the competition was open to clubs across the South of England to entertain the war-stricken nation.
There was also the Football League War Cup with regional rounds and a final leading up to an overall national final. Overall winners from 1940 to 1945 were West Ham beating Blackpool Preston beating Arsenal Wolves beating Sunderland Blackpool beating Arsenal Charlton/Aston Villa - shared Bolton beating Chelsea

Bah, Sissoko has opened the scoring with some poor Brentford defending to help it along. His head rose to meet the corner and he thumped it home with the keeper flying well but not able to keep it out. One-nothing.

Well, the shock of the game so far is that Spurs are actually trying to increase a one-goal lead.

But Brentford have turned up. Edging possession but yet to record an attempt on goal, Pinnock's head getting hold of a free-kick just there but directing the ball well wide.

The visitors notch their first attempt on goal but the weak header by Toney, was it? on '36 is easily dealt with by Lloris.

Dean blows up. Brentford can't find a penetrating enough route through the Spurs back line but have created two or three chances to level while the home side have contained well and created opportunities themselves.

Half an hour for Brentford to pull something out of the bag here. But this is looking increasingly like it'll be a successful Spurs assignment, traditional Spursyness notwithstanding. Brentford just can't catch a break.

Oh Toney has put it in the Spurs net on '62 but VAR rules it offside. By a millimetre. A bare millimetre. I'm going to keep saying Spurs will succeed in this assignment because 2 minutes after I first said it Brentford seriously threatened. Spurs will win this assignment.

That was a diabolically close call. Tighter than a buzzard's ass in a nosedive. Colin Bell, I just heard i my earpiece, has sadly passed away. But here's Son on the break...oh no. Is it?

Yes, Son fires it home after a lightning pick-up from Ndombele's ball. It's two-nothing. 20 minutes left.

Now it's Mbeuno for Brentford trying to pull one back but he's thwarted in the area by his own shot, well off. I'm not sure who is raving more, Thomas Frank or José Mourinho

Brentford reach the end of their cup run but go out giving a decent account of themselves. Tottenham wait to see which Manchester club they will face in the final on April 25th, not February 28th as originally scheduled.
The only low spot, apart from the defeat, was Dasilva going in on Hojbjerg and receiving a red from Mike Dean on '84 which left the Spurs man's shin not a pretty sight.
