I'd say the 80s, Jaws notwithstanding.

I think the 80's one deserves the edge because Spielberg reached a maturity as a director thanks to movies like E.T. and The Color Purple.

80s. I will only include Poltergeist in a Tobe Hooper 70s vs 80s battle.

I cannot really compartmentalize these 2 decades where Spielberg is concerned. I liked what he offered in both eras and both were very interesting evolvements both as a director and presenter of films.
I would even include Gremlins - 84' as well, because his personal stamp was all over that one as well, like Poltergeist - 82', in which he used Hooper as front for director due to guild regulations.

I think the 80's one deserves the edge because S pielberg reached a maturity as a director thanks to movies like E.T. and The Color Purple. I'd say his maturity as a director was peaking in the 90's rather than the 80's, but he also appeared to go more into self-important mode about his own works. His most mature work in the 80's would have been Empire Of The Sun - 87'.

The '80s primarily for the Indiana Jones films. I do like his '70s output a lot though.

Love Jaws, but the 80s, E.T., Goonies, Indiana Jones, a win/win all around.
