Very promising cast and an amazing cinematographer, I could see this being a big awards player, even if I can't stand David at all.

More join the cast. Is Russell trying to one-up Tarantino or something?
"Deadline has confirmed that Robert De Niro, Mike Myers, Timothy Olyphant, Michael Shannon, Chris Rock, Anya Taylor-Joy, Andrea Riseborough, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Alessandro Nivola have all joined the starry ensemble."

He's got quite a cast building up for this movie. I haven't seen such a big cast for a Russell film since American Hustle.

Perhaps but I'd like if he did something like an epic scaled message movie, something that Preminger or Kramer would had done.

I just don't think perhaps Russell has that talent at all, even his largest scale movie which was Three Kings, still felt very linear, and self aware.

So the movie' title is Amsterdam. The footage shown at CinemaCon has been described as such below:
David O. Russell’s latest film has finally come into focus, revealing the title “Amsterdam” and a Nov. 4 release date at CinemaCon.
Led by John David Washington, Margot Robbie and Christian Bale, the period piece was described as an “original romantic crime epic,” according to Disney executive Tony Chambers, who presented the film to the convention of American movie theater owners on Wednesday.
Releasing under the 20th Century Studios label, little has been known about the project from the director of “Silver Linings Playbook” and “The Fighter” except its sprawling cast — which includes Taylor Swift, Chris Rock, Zoe Saldana, Michael Shannon and Robert De Niro.
“Amsterdam” occupies a quirky and mysterious world in the 1930s, where the leading trio of Bale, Robbie and Washington “find themselves at the center of one of the most secret plots in American history.”
Rocking facial scars and wild hair, Bale’s character looks notably softer than the gritty figures Russell usually loves to make him play. A brunette Robbie and besuited Washington round out the trio nicely, as they face escalating danger (and plenty of drinking and dancing tossed in).
Swift surfaces as a mourning daughter, breaking down into tears before her father’s body as Rock looks on.
“You have a dead white man in a box. It’s not even a coffin, it has no lid,” Rock says as Swift sobs. “You know who’s going to get in trouble? The Black men.”
Additional cast includes Timothy Olyphant, Alessandro Nivola, Matthias Schoenaerts, Andrea Riseborough, Mike Myers, and Anya Taylor-Joy.

Typical David O Russell fare, giving actors license to overact, hoping to distract the audience from the fact that the movie isn't actually about anything. Only checked it out to see what Bale would do, even he couldn't save it for me. There were maybe 8 people in the audience, 7:00 on opening night.
David O. Russell sucks.

It's a flop. it was only 5th at UK BO at weekend - beaten by SMILE, THE WOMAN KING, DONT WORRY DARLING & TICKET TO PARAIDISE only 631k Guess that makes it a flop here too.

is this any good? i don't trust critics It's average.
The acting is good, with Bale doing slightly better than the rest but nobody is gonna get an Oscar for their performance. De Niro and Myers are pretty much portraying their characters the same way we've seen them do so for years now so nothing new or exciting from them. While it may not be the movie with the biggest star-studded cast, considering the way ("portrait" shots) and the pace at which some characters are introduced, there is enough faces and names to make it feel like a distraction at some point early on.
Story wise, things are slowly set in motion and it takes about half the movie to really get an idea of where it's going. Spoiler, this is where it all leads . Obviously some characters are fictitious, while others are clearly historical figures with a new name but anyone with a little knowledge of 20th century American history can figure this out easily without the Wiki.
Really personal opinion on this specific point but I felt one of the weakness was the choice to go for an "ambivalent" tone. The way the protagonists and their dynamics/interactions are written, it almost feel like they are taken from a comic album so a serious and darker tone could have worked just as well as a lighter and more silly one. The decision to keep "tacking" on both sides of the line between serious and comic felt like a bad idea because of the clash you get at times between consecutive shots and scenes. While it doesn't ruin the experience, it feels like having stuck with one would have made more sense. The movie as a whole is a little wacky so the options were there.
Visually, the movie looks nice. The duration feels right to keep you interested.
Overall a good entertainment but not a movie that will likely be remembered down the road.
6/10
