The first example I can think of is the Hobbit trilogy, where Ian McKellen is billed above Martin Freeman.

This tends to happen when someone who was a complete nobody when a film was released becomes huge afterwards. Warwick Davis used to have top billing for "Leprechaun" but after Jennifer Aniston joined "Friends" her name got top billing and the later movies covers feature her on the cover instead of Davis

The Godfather - Brando gets top billing but it’s very much Pacino’s movie.

Apocalypse Now - Brando & Duvall above Sheen.
We're talking Coppola's GF connection with those 2, + Brando surely had top billing as part of any deal.

Christoph Waltz- Inglorious Basterds. lets be honest regarding the biling, if Dicaprio were playing the role, he'd be considered a lead.

The lead characters are 2 teenage girls, but it makes sense that famous actors got top billing.

Stallone and Bautista have only about 10 minutes of screen time in the whole movie. The lead role is played by some Asian dude.

I just watched Operation Crossbow and Sophia Loren gets top billing even though her character is only on screen for about 15 minutes of the run time.

Maybe not, Leo was 3rd billing for Django. while thats true Landa is still a focal point character who we arguably get more perspective from throughout the story then Raine, and Pitts billed above him yet Landa arguably has the more predominant story arc.
