Background
Burkina Faso where this incident takes place is a very poor country in the Sahara Desert and politically unstable as well so it's very easy for Murders to go unsolved.
The Murders
As far as I can tell the first murder took place on December, 2008 but I can't find much information on the circumstances. And it is like this for most of the cases so Rather then documenting them one by one i'm going to give some information on the killings as a whole and talk about some more well known victims.
The crimes took place at the Boulmiougou district of Ouagadougou (The capital of Burkina Faso) otherwise known as Sector 17 the serial killer or possibly group of killers would target night watchman and guards or people sleeping in their homes and kill them with either a machete, Axe or rocks and stones and as a way to taunt authorities he or they would leave the murder weapon at the scene of crime because of this he was giving the nickname "L'homme à la hache" The official number of victims is 15 but it could be much higher and there were an unknown number of attempted murders
Some notable incidents
In 2009 a driver named Adama Bandé was killed by an man with an axe that was stolen from a concession. The killer broke down the door before cutting him up with an axe. This is the earliest incident I could find with actual information
On October 2, 2010 Marcelline Kabré a 17 year old girl was killed in her room. Her skull having been crushed with a large stone. She was also raped and her room was ransacked.
On November 13, 2010 a man named Mahamadi Nikièma was returning home after praying at the local mosque when we was ambushed. He received three machete wounds to his arm and during the struggle he received a blow to his head and had his rips broken but his cries alerted his neighbors causing the attacker to flee. The residents then rushed him to the hospital where thankfully he managed to survive.
This is the last one I could find but on January 4 or 5, 2011 A night watchman was found dead next to a mosque in a pool of his own blood and like the previous victims an axe was next to his body.
Aftermath
October 2010 murder was the last straw for many of the residents. Since I didn't mention them that much it should come as no surprise that the police didn't provide much help in this case the father of Adama Bandé would continue to call the police and gendarmeries asking for any progress into the investigation of his sons death and he never got any updates and died on July 3, 2011 with out any justice for his son.
The police themselves at first told the public that they were stumped and had no idea where to start. But in August 2009 they help a press conference where the heads of the Burkinabè gendarmerie/police promised they would arrest the killer or killers because they claimed another victim... A promise they did not keep.
In response to the brutal murder of Marcelline Kabré the town decided to take things into their hands and formed a vigilante committee. And decided to track down the killer themselves. The leader of the group justified this by claiming that the police in their own country were incapable of tracking down a serial killer like the police in the western world do and that they had no choice but to take matters into their own hands. Their plan was to have one member of each family stay up at night to keep guard and give every family a whistle to alert the neighborhood if they ever saw anyone suspicious.
It is also likely that if they caught the killer that they were going to lynch him instead of turning him into the police as lynchings like this are common in impoverished nations and in all likelihood the police would not do much to stop them.
However despite this they two were unable to find the killer
