Beauty and the Beast is the better film but The Little Mermaid has the better music. I love both and they're both in my top ten Disney.

BATB for sure. Ariel is kind of annoying. I'm torn on which has the better score though, and I think I have to give it to TLM. Belle had more spunk, but Ariel was just an inquisitive teen seeking more and she was silent for half the film. LM also has a great traditional animated Disney villain in Ursula and I agree wholeheartedly about LM's score being a tad superior to Beast.
The difference too, is that Ursula is a fantasy villain and Gaston is a human villain with a myriad of nasty flaws, he was also an ott klutzy stereotype. The magical qualities seemed to mesh in a more cohesive blend with Mermaid, when Beasts magic was more grounded in human characters caught up in a magical world. It came across as flat and detached to me.
I didn't relate as much to the talking, dancing and singing teacups and candelabras in Beast, Mermaid was a magical world caught up in the human world. The fairy tale aspect in LM seemed to be operating on a more ambitious and awesome platform. Beast's tale is more like something Walt Disney should have done in his heyday.
