Breaking News: Akhilesh Yadav to BBC - Ready for an alliance with BSP or Mayawati. These people are so desperate to stop NaMo. Just like in Bihar.

I really doubt BSP will align with the BJP, they don't want to lose the Muslim votebank. That opens the door for Congress to ally with BSP and seize UP.

I really doubt BSP will align with the BJP, they don't want to lose the Muslim votebank. That opens the door for Congress to ally with BSP and seize UP. If the numbers were to be believed Congress and BSP combined wouldn't even cross 100 seats. The only formidable alliance is that of BSP+SP+Congress. And for that to happen BJP should fall below 190 seats. BSP and SP were such sworn enemies back in the day and them coming together would be a mockery of democracy, not that it already isn't. And Mayawati banks on Dalits, not Muslims and Muslims mostly vote for SP. And she was in alliance with the NDA during Vajpayee era. So it isn't unthinkable. A Muslim friend and a former roommate of mine said BJP winning in UP and that he voted for BJP.

A BSP spokesperson on NDTV had said that they won't ally with BJP, during the exit polls discussion. Take that for what it's worth.

One could say political parties have come along way in India. That being said the spokesperson could as well have been a temporary English speaking political analyst hired for the next few days. So, not worthtaking seriously at all. Anyways, i dont really think Mayawati would be happy with Akhil esh in CM's chair.

My comment on UP Exit polls and here is the phase-wise breakup of BJP results. | Phases | Axis | CSDS | | Phase 1 - 73 seats | 50 | 33-39
| | Phase 2 - 67 seats | 21
| 15-21
| | Phase 3 - 69 seats | 39
| 27-33
| | Phase 4 - 53 seats | 37
| 27-33
| | Phase 5 - 52 seats | 26
| 14-20
| | Phase 6 - 49 seats | 34
| 18-24
| | Phase 7 - 40 seats | 34 | 15-21
|
Total 251 164-176Many experts here opine that BJP in Western UP has been grossly overestimated in Axis Poll, though they agree with BJP's performance in rest of the state and RLD, the party of Jats has grossly been underrated. And in the diametrically opposite CSDS survey that gives 155-167, journos say that BJP has been underestimated in Eastern UP and agree with the performance in the western part of the state. But even after desertion, BJP still projected to win 59% of the Jat votes (it was 80%+ in 2014), the community concentrated in Western UP could play spoiler for the BJP. So, Western UP is the nail-biter that might decide if BJP gets absolute majority or a hung assembly.

If Mayawati indeed unites with SP in case of a hung assembly, BJP should break UP into 4 or 5 states and BJP should should rule at least 3 or 4 states where it is going to get a majority.

One of the very few journalists with incredible credibility in India, MD Nalapat predicts a backlash against demonetization in the elections. He rightly predicted Trump's victory, Brexit and Bihar, 2015. He picks the trends of silent voters no one else usually do.
Now, I'm cautiously optimistic of BJP crossing 200 in UP.

By backlash it doesn't necessarily mean BJP is going to lose the base and suffer a rout. It just might be reduction in number of seats as compared to 2014, where they won 330. Them going down to 180 would be losing around 150 seats can certainly be called backlash against DeMo.
