Anyone else like this one? I’ve only seen a few episodes, but I’ve found it great fun—exactly the sort of thing I like. As a friend of mine put it, it’s “...an adventure series with a witty, cosmopolitan tone and the production standards of a movie.” Anyone else here a fan? Have some favorite episodes?

Great show. I only watched it in reruns, but it was while watching this show I thought Roger Moore would make a good James Bond.

Thanks for responding, camimac. (Your username is a palindrome--was that on purpose?) I think it's a great show too, and it strikes me that Templar is what Moore's Bond should have been. If he'd played Bond with a little more (no pun intended) of Templar's carefree charm and swagger, rather than the forced attempt at swagger in the Bond flicks, I would have enjoyed his performance a bit more. Have you by any chance seen the episode "Sibao"? Almost a dry run for, and (IMO) superior to, Live and Let Die.

Yes, my username is an intentional palindrome, but it is also a combination of my first and last name. The first four letters of my first name and the beginning of my last name. The fact that we didn't see Templar's carefree charm and swagger when Moore played Bond was probably intentional. they were probably trying to distance the two characters to some degree. They probably wanted Moore to play the role differently from Simon Templar. I may have seen the episode Sibao, but I don't know. Its been a long time since I saw any of the shows and I don't remember them by name.

I remember when The Saint was airing on TV but don’t think I saw a single episode. The show was produced in England by ITC and syndicated from 1963-66. It was picked up by NBC in the U.S. for three short seasons in 1967, ’68, and ’69. There was also a version that ran on CBS for one season (1979-1980) with Ian Ogilvy.
I have seen some of the Saint/Falcon film series from that were produced from 1938 to 1949. “The Falcon” a carbon copy of the Saint was created by RKO as a way to not have to pay royalties to the Saint’s author, Leslie Charteris. Charteris sued but lost. Of the 25 Saint/Falcon movies, either George Sanders or his real-life brother, Tom Conway, starred in all but four of them.
If I can find an hour between watching movies, I may see if I can’t rustle up some Roger Moore episodes, just to expand my Saint universe.

Mike, if you do get a chance to look at one or two of these episodes, I think you'll enjoy them. Moore is in his element in this series--dashing and clever, always with a quip at the ready. As Templar doesn't work for anyone but himself, he's less scrupulous than Bond and delights in taking down the rich and powerful ("modern-day Robin Hood," as they call him). The plots are always good and often excellent, with clever situations and complications, and the assortments of kooky characters Simon meets are enough to rival The Avengers! As for the two '40s series, I actually find the Falcon movies superior to the Saint movies. Far more entertaining, with some assorted gems in there. Tom Conway is actually better in both roles than George Sanders (IMO, of course), though Sanders started playing both roles.

I just heard that Roger Moore has died, age 89. Requiescat in pace.

I used to watch it all the time when I was growing up. Where I live we saw the 3 NBC seasons that Mikef6 wrote of in his post. I loved it! Every Saturday night at 7PM.
Either MeTV or AntennaTV aired the series a year or so ago on Sunday nights. Watched it every week, the first time since seeing it while growing up.
The Saint was my introduction to Roger Moore. I liked him from the first moment I saw him.

I think I have all the colour episodes on DVD, in two different boxes. I think they are entertaining if one takes them for what they are, escapism from a gone era. A young Donald Sutherland appeared in one of those episodes.

I really enjoyed this back in the 60s. I consider it Roger Moore's signature role. He is a perfect Simon Templar. As has already been stated his performances as James Bond would have been better if played like his Templar. I watched half a dozen episodes upon hearing of Moore's death last year, to honor his memory.

Above-average Saint tonight—Simon battles the Loch Ness Monster!
Did every ‘60s Brit TV show have a Scottish episode? The Avengers had “Castle De’ath,” with too many similarities to be mere coincidence. Maybe even shot on the same sets? And I think this is the first Saint episode I’ve seen in color, believe it or not!

Just finished “The Angel’s Eye.” Fun but standard for much of its running time, but it has a last-minute twist ending that I never saw coming.

I'm more familiar with the Ian Ogilvy version that mikef6 mentioned, which was Return Of The Saint. I used to watch it on The CBS Late Show and I really enjoyed it.

Catman remembers this from when he was a kitten and has thought about watching reruns that pop up on one of the local digital channels.

Best Saint episodes I’ve seen so far:
“Sibao” (great stuff: Haiti, voodoo, zombies, curses. Almost a dry run for, and better than, Live and Let Die. Quick pace)
“The Old Treasure Story” (how can anyone resist a story about Blackbeard’s treasure? Simon as proto-Indiana Jones, also fast pace)
“The Convenient Monster” (Simon vs. the Loch Ness Monster!)
“The Spanish Cow” (unexpectedly involving jewel-robbery story with good pace and twist)
“The Arrow of God” (Chesterton pastiche, Simon as Golden Age sleuth)
“The Saint Plays with Fire” (halfway between mystery and spy thriller: Simon vs. neo-Nazis who have murdered crusading journalist. Nazi leader’s identity not too surprising, but better is how Simon convinces pompous, naïve heiress that what she’s doing is wrong)
Episodes I have yet to see but am looking forward to: “The Careful Terrorist,” “The Pearls of Peace,” “The Wonderful War,” “The Golden Frog,” “Island of Chance,” “A Double in Diamonds,” “The House of Dragon’s Rock.”
Recommendations more than welcome.

I have all the DVDs, b+w and color, and have seen all of them , in fact twice over. Love them. I can recommend both motor racing episodes " The Checkered Flag" and " The Fast Women ". Also the b+w episode The Smart Detective. Honorable mentions for " The Miracle Tea Party "and " The Bunco Artists " from the b+w set. But " The Loving Brothers" is the best for me.But yes, Pearls Of Peace is terrific. From the color ones: " The Man Who Liked Lions" and " The Double Take " Also have seen all of Return of the Saint with Ian Ogilvy made in '79 not bad at all, some good stories and great location filming in Europe.

The entire series is on Amazon Home Video — free to stream for Amazon Prime members (or at least it was in 2019)... I watched every episode and enjoyed it immensely. Simon Templar is the role Moore was born to play, not James Bond. (Even his TV fight scenes are superior... Due to being younger & fitter, perhaps?)
Out of all the episodes, only one goes full-bore sci-fi... Templar tangles with a mad scientist who’s breeding a species of giant ant! (I’m talking “THEM!” sized critters.) It’s a strange outlier, to be sure.

Mustn't forget this classic episode, The Inescapable Word, excellent mystery, and tense story.
