I grew up with the Roger Moore 007 films and Moonraker was one of my favorites growing up. I still love it a lot, especially the cable car sequence in Rio and the glass factory fight in Venice. It's a slight step down from Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only but it's still a fun ride.

This was not only the final appearance of Bernard Lee's M, it also marked the final composition of the "007" Theme, the John Barry piece used in FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE (The Gypsy Raid and the Embassy break-in), THUNDERBALL (during the underwater battle), YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE (the beginning part of Bond's Gyrocopter ride), and DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER (the final battle).

It's my least favorite of the Roger Moore films.

It's not very good but it has a campy charm to it. No question if it were released today as a continuation to Daniel Craig's era it would sink the franchise in a heartbeat.

Like all opinions, it is subjective. I grew up on Moore's 007's and they are my favorites of the franchise. Dalton is my second favorite. Not big on Connery's, nor do I really care for what came after the 80's.
Moonraker - 79' is my sister's favorite and good for her. She loved it when the next Moore 007 was being released and she got so much enjoyment out of them. She lost interest after he left the series and Dalton took over.
While it is admittedly not one of the best, (this would largely be general consensus I would say), it is nothing put pure escapist entertainment. It was largely made to cash in on the space rage in the late 70's. At the end credits of The Spy Who Loved Me - 77', which I personally feel is Moore's best (though not my favorite of his), it claims 007 will return in For Your Eyes Only. That seals the reason why Moonraker was made.
Moonraker also has the same director as Spy, expensive/epic looking sets and set-pieces, has a polished and glossy feel about it and was afforded the best quality of what Hollywood big-budget film-making was about in that late 70's era. It might be bubblegum presentation, this was the first Bond in NZ to be given a GY rating, which is similar to PG today, whereas all the others were rated GA (Approved general exhibition, suitable for adult audiences). The Y was suitable for youth audiences over 13.
It was great fun and nothing more and it still managed to retain some intense and darker moments. I still get on edge when the girl is chased by Drax's Rotties in the woods and John Barry's fine and lush score amps up the suspense and impending demise of this lovely lady. Not to mention when Bond and Holly are stuck underneath one of the Moonrakers thrusters about to take off and they have to make a narrow escape through the ducting with the flames chasing down on them. Moore was constantly telling Goodhead to get a move on as he couldn't be slowed or dragged down. And those teeth of Jaws...Yowwwww! Who wants to get chomped on by those.

Actually the criticism has zilch to do with Connery fanboyism or Q stealing the end. The opposition is that it is too Over the Top, seeing it as the nadir of the Bond films doing the ‘Goldfinger’ formula of Larger than life situations, science fiction, etc. There are moments of seriousness like the centrifuge scene and Drax killing his secretary, but the majority is tongue-in-cheek to the extreme. Bond fans thought this was so out of touch with the spy film source. The producers thought so too, and toned things down to FOR YOUR EYES ONLY. I actually like that it is more ott than some of the others. It was a smash hit and was enjoyed by many and its presentation also makes it stand out from the rest and not really in a detrimental way. Only basement dwelling 007 fanboys will likely get all hysterical over it.

Dolly not wearing braces is one of the big "Mandela effects." A lot of people remember her wearing braces. This is something that I cannot be clear on, because that is how I remembered it as well, unless it is something that I felt might have worked better as a sight gag, even as a kid. The first Lethal Weapon - 87', I'm certain had Gibson eating a raw onion on the initial theatrical release I saw, which wasn't in any other version I recall seeing after the cinema run.
