The MCU makes successful movies, and to haters that's the "formula". Doesn't matter that each movie has differences from the rest, the fact that they're all fun, enjoyable and successful must mean they follow the same formula. With the exception of Increbible Hulk. Admittedly, Hulk is kind of a hard concept to get more than a few movies out of on his own.

That, and the films don't pride themselves are being so edgy someone might just die if they cut themselves on it. The real funny part is that people live off of formulas every day of their lives. Cars are formulaic. Video games. Hell, the internet is built on formulas.

I think the formula is Beginning, Middle, End.

The only thing the haters have been able to point to as "the formula" is the humor. Because heaven forbid anyone ever approach a superhero film with a sense of self-awareness.
Also, don't you love when we point out that cops, soldiers, fire-fighters, EMTs, and other rescue workers make off-color jokes to release tension, but they'll still blow us off? I've even pointed out multiple times that "Saving Private Ryan" has a surprising amount of humor in it for being so dark, and the source of it is the smart-alecs in Captain Miller's crew. There are points when Edward Burns, Adam Goldberg, and Barry Pepper are hilarious together!

TRIGGER WARNING:
Quippy lead character + generic color palette + generic music + generic villain + low stakes (because no one stays dead) = Marvel.
I'm not saying this is BAD, mind you. But this formula permeates every single MCU movie.

Tell that to all the characters who have stayed dead, idiot. There is no formula. Since when are Bruce Banner and Steve Rogers quippy?
Dear God, if Hans Gruber from the original "Die Hard" was a Marvel villain and portrayed exactly the way he was in terms of characterization, you'd be calling him generic, too, and you'd be lamenting how Marvel "wasted" Rickman in the role.

I wonder what the next franchise they'll come up with when superhero movies stop making money. Hard to believe back in 2008 when studios gave that vehicle wheels it would change cinema forever. I never would've thought an ensemble movie like 'The Avengers' could ever get made, to see that many superheros together like that in a live-action film didn't seem possible.

I wonder what superpower Dennis Reynolds would have if he were in the MCU?

None. He'd die in Sokovia.

I could just as easily say: Dreary lead character + saturated color palette + overpowering music + disjointed storyline + unnecessary destruction = DC

Don't forget "poorly written generic villain that make the Marvel villains look Shakespearean by comparison."

But this formula permeates every single MCU movie. All people have humor, it's just a fact of life. Generic? How? The music is fine. You shouldn't go to a movie solely for the music. The story is about the hero first and foremost. They don't buy into that bankrupt "The Hero is only as good as the villain" argument, because that's a lazy argument. The only reason people say there are no stakes is because MCU is nice enough to let us know there are future movies being planned. Naturally, this kindness is repaid with criticism. No CBM is going to kill off the entire cast.

People like Dennis don't seem to realize how much screen time the hero would have to give up in order to develop the villain more. Films have limited running times, so something has to give, and Marvel has chosen to use that time on the heroes.

In the past few months, we've had nonpartisan people release videos scientifically explaining why both the LOOK and MUSIC of the Marvel films are generic AF. It's science.
