i didn't realize i could make money taking off my clothes until i was 21, and that was after already wasting years of my adult life letting my parents tell me not to work while in school. or is it just the technology these days that didn't exist a decade ago?

I don't think it's that they're smarter about money, it's that there are platforms available now where anyone with a laptop can make money by taking off their clothes and earn money.
It used to require a camera, director, crew, lighting, special equipment, and a production.
Just like there's no such thing as news or journalism anymore. Any yabbo with a cellphone can whip their phone out and record/edit stuff and post it online, get hits/clicks,...
Now there are "influencers" who get paid to do nothing but talk about a product on YouTube. No college degree required. No high school graduation required. No education required.
People/kids in general are getting "paid" to do some really stupid stuff. Never mind stripping and being a cam girl, things like pranks will also earn people money. Look at Jake Paul.

Apparently for most of those using their bodies to make money it’s a short lived career and according to Jon Ronson’s book it’s a very short lived career which isn’t made much easier by the dominance of free sites like PornHub.

Making fast money leads to independence, which I needed when I was younger to cut ties with an abusive family. I wish I was smart enough when I was younger to figure out the ways that young people are now using to make a quick buck. There was a recession when I was in high school and was supposed to start working (2008-2011). The resume writing tips I received from teachers turned out to be crap (like listing your hobbies...I got that from a drama teacher) and grown ups were less in tune with technology so they didn't know anything about computer programs I listed that I could use. They thought it was so impressive that I wrote that I could use MS Paint. Well I've never had a job where I've used MS Paint. I only had a brief summer job in 2010 and did not attempt to look for work in my first 2 years of university enrolment because my parents forbade me to because of the difficult content they forced me to study. Of course in retrospect I feel stupid about this because I would have had the right to make any decision I wanted once I turned 18. When I did attempt to look for employment while in school I was rejected for not having full time availability, and there was high youth unemployment in the place I lived www.ctvnews.ca/canada/ontario-youth-unemployment-among-the-worst-in-canada-report-1.1473423. That's why I briefly did camgirling when I was 21 and earned thousands in a few months. There are high school students working at the grocery store that I work at and they are so much more financially aware than I was at their age. They know about buying bitcoin, and that meal plans are a rip off and to cook your own food. When I was their age I was simply listening to the bullcrap my parents told me and didn't question it!
