Rommel, who was ill, had left Africa for good by the time Patton effectively took over command of the U.S. II Corps.
They never really squared off against each other in battle.
- Rommel defeated Gen. Lloyd Fredendall at Kasserine Pass. - Patton defeated Gen. Jurgen von Arnim (commander of Panzergruppe Afrika after Rommel's departure) at El Guettar.
As soon as Allied forces landed in Morocco & Algeria in November '42 (Operation Torch), the Axis forces in North Africa had ZERO chance of holding out, much less defeating the Allies.
