Just listened to a Malcolm Gladwell podcast which was centred around this painting and the life of Elizabeth Thompson. She produced Victorian military paintings and as a child I loved Scotland Forever but this one was relatively unknown to me. For a painting of its time there’s a lot of humanity and weariness in a depiction of a post victory roll call and reminded me of the final scene in Zulu Here’s a video about the painting. I was hoping to find the scene from Zulu on YoTube but failed.
