In recent years I have sneaked a recommendation for this series into several threads on this board. I was interested to read in this BBC article of the production problems. These may explain its sometimes "scrappy" quality. However, I do not think this detracts from its success. It just removes it further from the realm of polished studio productions which, in this case, is a good thing. It is streaming on BritBox, which is available in the USA and other Anglophone nations outside the UK. If you get a chance to watch it, please give it a try. For me it is the best original drama ever shown on British TV. Many may struggle with the Geordie accents so I hope it has captions. Article by Simon Armstrong

I did not see the whole thing but a couple of episodes...it was certainly well received at time. Mr Craig the highest profile star to emerge from it...but glad to see Gina McKee still around - she popped up in the new BLACK NARCISSUS recently ...as a visiting nun (character omitted from 47 version).. and she had a small but memorable role in PHANTOM THREAD

I remember the series on BBC America around the turn of the century. It was pretty much my intros to Eccleston and McKee although I didn’t realize til now that was Daniel Craig.

Among the cast of 'Our Friends In The North', Malcolm McDowell (the 'Mick Travis Trilogy'), Peter Jeffrey (the 'Mick Travis Trilogy'), Peter Vaughan (Ken Russell's 'Prisoner Of Honor', 1991). Tony Haygarth ('Britannia Hospital', 1982) and Alun Amstrong (in theatre, 'The Changing Room' in 1971) all worked with director Lindsay Anderson in their careers.
